Would you be satisifed with d20 as your only RPG? [Ties into RyanD's blog entry.]

Personally I've played D&D, Das Schwarze Auge (DSA), Shadowrun 3e, CoC (mainly d20), and a bit of World of Darkness, sniffed around in GURPS and Ars Magica... and yeah, that's it.

And personally, I think the d20/OGL core engine is immensely adaptable and flexible. Happy with it. It has its flaws, but the core mechanic (d20 + Bonus vs. DC) is from my point of view not superior compared to dice pool games, just different. And depending on the exact use of the OGL (see Conan, Arcana Evolved, True20, VP/WP-Systems, Grim&Gritty, and so on), I see that d20 is flexible enough to give me my RPG fun, and frees me from learning a completely new game system. This outweighs the flaws by far.

Plus, I believe that d20 is customizable enough to cover almost everything (if tinkered enough with it).

I'm curious. I often hear that d20 is not very good in simulating certain genres, but I cannot really think of one, that wouldn't work (albeit with adapted OGL rules).

The only game I play is D&D.

I've tried other RPGs (Champions, Rolemaster, Feng Shui), but none of them brought enjoyment at a level anywhere near D&D for me. My thoughts were always, "so when are we going to play D&D again?"

That's pretty much where I am. I am looking for the D&D experience-- kill bad guys, take their stuff, and power up. That's what I want to do, regardless of game system.

What was my Shadowrun experience? Champions? Boot Hill? Kill the bad guys, take their stuff, and power up.

Vampire? Star Wars? Call of Cthulhu? Kill the bad guys, take their stuff, and power up.

Those last three didn't really work out. Neither the rules nor the genre supported what I wanted to do, so there was always dissatisfaction with my game experience, no matter how adeptly the GM ran the game.

Needless to say since the release of d20 I haven't bothered to dabble outside the primary provider of my desired RPG experience.

Yes I am happy enough to never play another system (currently).
If it came down to I had to learn/play something else to get together with friends weekly for a beer & pretzels game then I would.

Close, but since True20 is technically not d20, I have to say no.
Ha. I'm pretty much in the same boat.

But I'd add in things like Conan [OGL], A Game of Thrones [OGL]. . . and so on.

So, if the question was as I first interpreted it (i.e., "d20" == d20/OGL), then my answer would be "sure, if that's the way things happened to be."

I'm a RPG system slut.

I used to try so many system because I was on a quest to find the perfect system.

These days, I've decided that there isn't a perfect system (or that there are lots of perfect systems) & try so many games because I enjoy the variety.

I do often find myself, however, wanting to play a system but having a hard time figuring out why I would run a particular campaign under it instead of something else.

In the short term, I'm fine with d20, yes.

In the long term, I really do like to mix things up with other systems, that behave differently and lend themselves to other flavors. So, no, I would not want to be on a diet of pure d20 for the rest of my life.

With enough effort d20 could be the only game you need. But with that said I dont want to put in that kind of effort so I do play other games and would not be satisfied with only d20.

So after all my babbling, the big question is are you satisifed enough with d20 that you never need to play another RPG again? (I would have made this a poll, but I wanted more then a yes or no answer.)

Yep. But we'll see how things turn out. Never is a long time, and the changes of GURPS 4e look interesting. And who knows if/when there is a 4e D&D.
