D&D 5E (2014) Would you buy a 5E updated reprint of the First Forgotten Realms Box Set

Would you buy a 5E update to the original Forgotten Realms Box Set?

  • Yes - This is a product I'd buy at reasonable prices

  • No - Even at a reasonable price, I would not buy it.

I wish they would reprint it, and I wish people would use it as a One True Bible of the Realms. That way Zakhara could be its own (radically superior) setting, unpolluted by the generic mess that is the Forgotten Realms.

Ahh, dreams.

No, because I'm not mourning the Time of Troubles or the 3rd edition Realms. I liked the Spellplague for what it was, and I'm more than pleased with the Sundering as a setting for my now and future Realms games. If they publish any new Forgotten Realms stuff, it ought to be more about the Sundering, and how we got here from the Spellplague.

Well with a reprint of the 1e box (which is what the OP posted), you would not have Time of Troubles or 3rd edition Realms.

If WotC released a new boxed set that was a page for page reprint of the original Forgotten Realms boxed set with the only changes being updates to the stats inside of it to take the NPCs, etc... up to 5E stats and standards, would you buy it? A 'Tales of the Yawning Portal' style update to the boxed set?

Absolutely not. However,

Would I buy a 5e rules-version of an updated 1485DR (or whatever current year) timeline for the Realms, complete with new NPCs, timeline of what's transpired, etc.?

In a heartbeat, I would.

The Sword Coast Adv. Guide, while pretty good, was paper thin on detail, and left me seriously wanting more.

Same thing with Eberron or Dark Sun. Can I live without 'em? Sure. Would I shell out money if they existed? In a heartbeat.

I am tempted to buy Xanathars. Other than that, I am ready for a new setting and something spelljammery. My money is best spent elsewhere right now.

There is an updated Timeline recopilated by fans with accurate sources at Candlekeep.com.

Here it is

I've been comparing Volo's Guide to the North and the SCAG and one could use Volo's Guide in 5e with little changes except everything regarding Sundabar, Citadel Felbarr and a couple more places.

One would also have to change the NPCs names but there are a lot of sources than can provide them.

Cool, thank you! Like I said, I could live without such, but it would be nice enough to have all in one book, that I would have gotten such. Reading a bit of this, I do take issue with what looks like them massively retconning the setting as a way to make favorable changes, though. (Hey, Mirt's back! Hey, Durnan's not really gone! Oh, look, all your favorite gods came back! etc.) (old joke) next thing you know, The Simbul is going to catch Elminster coming out of the shower towelling off, and it's actually 1372DR and the whole thing was a dream sequence.

Good god. That updated timeline post from Candlekeep is the perfect example to post in the "why hated" thread. As a DM running a GAME, the last thing I want is some player spouting all that nonsense about how things should be (and I have had such issues many moons ago)

And for some, I'd wager, that post belongs in the "why loved" thread, though I cannot fathom it. Those updates seem just as lame as the events of the ToT and the Spellplague eras.

Yes to this so much.

I.... I actually wouldn't mind that lol.

But there are still enough changes (no Silver Marches, Elturgard and Tymanther still existing) to make it different from the 2e/3e Realms. I do agree that they might be overdoing it a bit with bringing back old NPCs though..

From what it sounds line, Xanathar's is going to be like Volo's and be pretty much setting neutral, with some minor FR fluff that can easily be excised and ignored...
