I don't know he economics in your games, but in mine, a commoner makes around 30-50 gp a month, and a noble around 150 gp a month. So, if a NPC rewarded someone to save his life, I think that 30,000 gp is way over the top of believability. I wouldn't mind my PC find such a fortune in a forgotten treasure, but someone giving it to them just to say "thank you"?? However... lets say that the wizard is not of a good alignment, and that he prefers to get rid of the gems for a very good reason. Now, it's the PCs who will have to deal with the problem.Crothian said:

I would never do it, personally because I tend to overdo it with the rewards naturally anyway. Not nearly as bad as a chaos diamond, but still more than they should be getting for their level. Plus my group has more of a "money goes almost entirely towards equipment" mindset. Not that that's bad (I do it too), just that it's how it is.

Unskilled labor makes a silver piece a day or about 3 gold a month. Craftmen can earn ten to 20 times that depending on how good they are at what they do. Nobles can make 100 to a 1000 or more a month. Some people are very wealthy but they are the elite.
They did not safe the Wizards life. The Wizard, they know, was never in any danger and if fact the Wizard pretended to be on the same side as the goblins. You are correct though, it does not make sense. It is a plot builder, the first taste of a plot line. Should they be concerned? Ya, I think they should./ Are they? WEll, not quite yet but they haven't had it long.

It won't. It looks like they are going to craft some items that they can which is good as that will stretch the money they have. The dwarf is going to craft himself a pair of hammers which is also cool, I like when the players choose to make things verse just trying to buy them. I'm hoping some of them think to tithe the gods, that would actually be thje best way they can spend it. The gods notice those things.

Eh. Compared to PCs who have rolled ability scores that would cost like 51 point-buy points or are Gestalt characters, equipment worth a few thousand gp more than the suggested average is no biggie if you know what you're doing.
Heck, I know from experience that I could even run a good campaign for PCs for whom all of the above was true - and I suspect Crothian very well might, too.
