Would you hold it against a book if...

See, I would disagree strongly. While not for everyone, I guess, to me the anime style is very well suited for fantasy artwork.

*shrugs* Tsyr - it may be ok for some settings but definitely not for others .... darksun for instance. Needs to be gritty and anime just doesn't hit the spot. It's fine for cutsey / fluffy worlds.

(To clarify, I do own a fair bit of anime/manga myself)

Yes, but again, I think this is a matter of opinion, hardly objective truth. Nothing about anime is inherently "cute" or "fluffy". Check out Berzerk, for example. I could very, very easily see Dark Sun done in anime style, and done well.

That's the first time I've ever seen anyone describe Urotsukidoji as "cutesy/fluffy".

Were such art printed in a non-anime RPG book, it might confuse people. In addition, it can hardly capture the same feeling as traditional fantasy art by Brom, or Elmore, or Easley, or the like.
I wouldn't call Brom's art anything even remotely resembling traditional. He has a very unique style that is readily identifiable no matter what he portrays and it is far from traditional.

Elmore, Easley, Parkinson... they're the tradionalists.

Anime is for anime. Leave it there.

To Anime or not to Anime

I personally like realism. Even if anime in a book was drawn realistically (which is unlikely, seeing as most anime exagerates something) I would be hard pressed to enjoy the book. Anime is great on its own ... even some of the weird stuff. I, however, dont want to mix my palette. Chocolate and Pizza are not a good combo.

Ugh. Seeing the cartoony-style anime artwork would definitely put me right off a book. I can't speak for any other styles of anime but then to be honest from what I have encountered it would seem that the bulk of anime *is* the cartoony stuff in which people look highly unrealistic.
