Would you leave your life behind?

if i could pick my race then sure! I'd be there in a heartbeat

halfling rogue 6/assasian 10

That would take me to 16th level and then it's time to retrain those rogue skills for epic style...

Slap me in the world of Daemonforge where you live and die by the power of your sword and wit and I am so set.

Would I survive that long? Probably, as long as I managed to find a guild and join up, that's the key for survival. Then it's only a matter of time before i make my way to the top...

Assuming I could never get back (or even not getting back within weeks) and assuming this is in a "published" D&D world?

No.

* I'd miss my family, friends, and girlfriend.

* The number of times a character would have died but was spared via DM fiat is without measure. Ergo, I'd have the life expectancy of a Honda dealer at a Harley Davidson rally.

* To quote Gilligan's Island, "No phone, no lights, no motor car, not a single luxury." The masses of wizards/clerics/druids/whatever that act in a support role for gaming worlds are never, ever in evidence. People have a habit of saying "oh, yeah, they're out there" but for the most part I've never seen 'em in the books. Magic strikes me as the ultimate social divider. The "haves" are in a phenominally better position than the "have nots". Technology improves with time. A $100 TV purchased today is far superior to a $100 TV purchased in 1970. In other words, "real" fantasy would be a headache and a half.

* Illithids eat your brain. Is it just me, or does that seem a little more meanacing when it's your actual brain they want to eat as opposed to an imaginary brain belonging to a piece of paper?

* Species/racial hatred is common in these worlds. I find that depressing.

* Can I mention "Illithids eat your brain" twice? I mean .... IT"S MY FRIGGING BRAIN!

* This past weekend I travelled 1,000 miles in a matter of hours, ate food from around the world, listened to music of my choice that played at my whim, went boating for recreation as opposed to doing it to get the Gem of Water that had to be combined with the Crystal Fire of the Northern Elves and use it to prevent the ninth coming of the immortal demon T'abunkus, had a marvelous time in a jacuzzi that I will not detail here, and you're telling me I don't already live a fantasy life?

* Intellect Devourers. Brains. Eating thereof.

* Clothes that fit. Ever wear a tunic? Ever wear underwear that didn't have elastic? Clothes that fit are highly undervalued. As are flush toilets, refridgerators, and tap water. It would be like camping all the time only there would be things trying to eat my brain.

* The only life I could possibly make for myself is as a fashion designer. Computer programmers are not in high demand in fantasy worlds and I don't kid myself about being able to "make gunpowder" or any other thing cross-dimensional heros seem to have no problem doing. I would design a line of men's garments that acknowledged the existance of a crotch and a line of women's cold-weather gear because the poor things always seem to be on the verge of frostbite in these worlds. This does not strike me as a fufilling life.

Plus, there's no clothing designer prestige class that prevents you from getting your brain turned into someone's Pop-Tart.

Well, I don't exactly agree with ALL of your fears BG, but I must say, I don't think I've laughed that hard all week as just now, reading your post.

I wouldn't have to think very long at all about it.

I'd be out the door and into the fantasy world FAST.

Would I miss the family, friends, and significant other I was leaving behind? Yes. Would I miss them enough to skip a once in a lifetime opportunity? No.

For everyone thinking of the dangers of adventuring... I would eventually be a Wizard 10/ Loremaster 10. I provide information. I don't leave my tower unless I know exactly what I'm getting into... Divination might not be the most exciting school around, but combine it with a high intelligence and a good amount of survival interest and you'd be nearly impossible to harm. (Contingency: Teleport as soon as I take over half damage?)

I love information. As an electrical engineer/part time webmaster/sometimes chemist, its one of the foundations of my job. What better life than one where I can commune with the deities themselves to find out what I need to know? Or spy on conversations several rooms away? (As an aside, I could make gunpowder from scratch... as I'm sure most people who dabble in chemistry could. It really isn't all that hard to make black powder.)

Not to mention that prestidigitation, levitation, FLY, unseen servant, teleportation, telekinesis... these spells make life even easier than it is here in this world.

And BG and I agree on one thing: I'd *NEVER* get involved if there were Illithid around. Shudder.

Seriously, who says that YOU have to be the one that saves the world every time? It's a world filled with adventurers, right? Well, SOMEBODY has to play the old sage that sets them on the path to victory, right?? :)

By the way: Wizard (Diviner) 10/ Loremaster 10. Epic levels (if any): Loremaster. All of the item creation feats. A psuedo-dragon familiar if I could manage it. If I actually make it to epic levels, Extend Lifespan and Efficient Item Creation.

------------------------

Final aside: Interesting topic. Fascinating replies to it. And yes, I realize it's just a game. :D

While I do suspect I could do wonders metallurgy wise in such a world, I have no desire to give up my technology or friends.

I am probably good enough at chemistry and metallurgy to do some of the stuff from Sword and the Chain.

Though now that you mention it, having my brains eaten is a damn good argument against it as well.

...I wouldn't miss this psycho world one bit.

Let me get this straight - you want to live in a world where your daily routine consist of stabbing, skewering and zapping sentient beings in order to make a living and you think this world is psycho?

 :D

A dozen years ago when I was an ignorant teenager, I fantasized about such a thing actually. But now that I have grown up I realize two things...

1) Life is pretty good for me
2) People who are bored or want more will be bored and want more no matter what is going on around them... the setting is secondary to the state of mind. If you are unhappy in this world there is a 99.5% chance you will be unhappy in a fantasy world.

Re: Re: Indoor Plumbing

What world is this? Surely not the world _I_ selected. Nor Forgotten Realms.
I'm assuming you're thinking along the lines of the Forgotten Realms, which is almost the defacto standard amongst D&D players when one thinks of a fantasy world. (Yes, DL, GH, etc, replace FR with the appropriate generic setting).

But I was focusing towards worlds set in the medival period with dragons, magic and appropriate economies and politics typical to the medival period.

Evidently, you aren't familiar with the world of darkness.

'world' of darkness,

not 'World of Darkness'.

I'm quite specific, but possibly a bit vague in the non reference to WoD.

If the question were, "Would you go to a parallel universe with the same technology level AND with magic+beasts",

Well... Why go at all if you cant get back?

A chance to fly ala fly spell ?

A chance to increase your strength to 19 ?

A chance to beat mindflayers ?

A chance to become a king ?

I dont think so.

There is no reason to give up our common luxuries for getting your brain eaten, or even going into a world where humans arnt at the top of the foodchain (re: vampires / mindflayers).

A quote of his I've always liked...

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, isn't imagination a precious thing? It peoples the earth with all manner of wonders, strange beasts and birds, angels, cherubim and seraphim. And it has to be exercised. No child should be permitted to grow up without exercise for imagination. It enriches life for him. It makes things wonderful and beautiful.

Knowing what Twain was like, I wouldn't take that quote at face value. ;)

If there's dinosaurs, I can't say no. Always wanted to see dinosaurs.

Otherwise I'd need to have my wife along. Though I think she'd pretty much be up for the trip.

Thing is, it's not really about life in medieval times, fulfilling a fantasy, dealing with violence, all that. The big issue is, if I didn't go, I would ALWAYS wonder.

When you're presented with a once-in-lifetime opportunity, well, you just don't want to get old thinking to yourself "I should have done that when I had the chance..."

While there's every possibility that in El Mundo Fantastico I won't in fact get old (Illithids! Ack!), IF I do, I can't imagine that I'll be all regretful about things. I'm not very regretful at the best (er, worst) of times anyways.

But if there's dinosaurs, I'm there.
