Would you leave your life behind?

Err.. I don't care for the reference, but he is superior. Knowledge and understanding tends to lead to that.

But, then, I don't have any particular fancy towards the Pendragon legends.

Well, alright. I admit I don't know whether Mark would like it or not. However, I read the book when I was in my teens and I simply loved the legends of Pendragon and I was very happy when I found the book. In those days fantasy-literature was pretty scarce.

The Yankee however is such an obnoxious bastard. He's like a white supremacist in his attitude towards the people of Camelot. He thinks that he is so superior and he stops at nothing in his attempts to ridicule the knights and their ideals. He never stops to think that his knowledge might be a product of the efforts of those who came before him. He belittles Merlin by using his knowledge of astronomy and he trounces a knight in a joust using "modern" means (1890).

As I was hoping for a story more akin to the Narnia books I was pretty disappointed. Still, no shadow over the great Mr Twain. I still love Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer. :)

You have to understand that a lot of this is just the type of stuff Twain wrote. I'm actualy a rather big fan of Twain. But he was never above mocking things, people, places, events... himself included.

But I don't think Twain would be against RPGs. He might not like some GAMERS, and the lengths to which they take things, but the games themselves? Nah.

A quote of his I've always liked...

Now, isn't imagination a precious thing? It peoples the earth with all manner of wonders, strange beasts and birds, angels, cherubim and seraphim. And it has to be exercised. No child should be permitted to grow up without exercise for imagination. It enriches life for him. It makes things wonderful and beautiful.

Read the book and get back to me.

One can also argue that the opposite is true.

Back to topic.

Once, when I was much younger, I might have jumped at the chance. But that would have been because I was young and stupid.

1. The past four hundred years or so have been a gradual rise along the technological S-curve, and we're just now starting to hit the vertical section. The next hundred years or so are going to be a lot more interesting to me than a static, low-tech society, no matter how whizbang the spells are.

2. One of the defining elements of fantasy worlds, at least the ones we play in, is that the conflicts are bigger and more whizbang than they are in our real lives. I don't really have a strong yearning to spend the rest of my life worrying about violence.

3. My favorite worlds are the ones that generate the best stories. Good stories does not equal good living, however, and my favorite worlds are often brutal. He opens the portal, and I'm all like, "You tryin' to kill me!? They be nasty stuff there!"

Not a chance. I know too much about the filth and disease and rotten food of medieval life to ever want to live in it for real.

Besides, I wouldn't leave my husband. After 14 years, he's still the best thing to ever happen to me. And I'd miss my sweet little dog too.

Oh, and did I mention blow dryers? Where would I plug it in? Sorry, no dice.

Sheesh the middleages were not THAT bad. They could identify rotten food then too. They only ate it if they had to. Also they knew how to keep clean. Oftentimes they did not eat rotten food because most of the economy except in towns was agrarian. Current archeology suggests that peasants in the Middle ages actually more often than not had full sets of teeth. The things that caused you to loose them was not diet but rather tripping on things and fighting. Nobles had horrible teeth because thier diet consisted of meat, very sweet wines, and very rich sweets. This combined with a lifestyle of fighting led to some hideous maws.

Blow driers? Cantrip spells. He is not asking you to go back to the middle ages, he is asking you to go to a Fantasy Land based on the middle ages.

But I wouldn't go either unless I could bring my friends and family. And then again, we dont know who or what this guy is. He could be evil. yeah you get to the fantasy setting but you dont get to leave his tower. Bummerino.

Aaron.

You want me to leave my 9-5 wage slave job that I hate, 180 TV channels of mostly drivel, and our dog eat dog society which forces me to put in a home security system and buy a handgun?

A society whose values are crass, shallow and based on the god almighty dollar? A society where the best hope for fame would be to assasinate someone important?

Sign me up. I would be gone in a flash. Sure, the new world would be a dangerous place without the modern conveniences, but I know how to live without the conveniences. And an average joe in a fanatasy world would be in no more danger than an average joe living in a city core in the middle of gangland in our current world.

I would be a world in which I could matter or die trying. Hell, give it enough time and I would be ruling some kingdom somewhere.

Plus it would give me a chance to deal with truly evil S.O.Bs. in a way our world would not allow without me standing trial and getting life for doing it.

Exactly. Living among the Hawkbrothers? It's not even leaving behind much in the way of the nice things we have... they have magic to supply, basicly, everything we have... lights without fire, hot and cold running water, healing to rival modern medicine, indoor plumbing, good food, warmth in the winter, cool in the summer...

It's like eden, but with magic and swords and stuff.
