Would you leave your life behind?

Some points -

I've read Timeline. I liked it. However, the people in timeline did not have Cure Serious, Heal, Remove Disease, etc. This would make a mountain of difference in living quality if you had a bit of cash on hand.

As for if I'd do it?

I'd try to deal with the wizard guy. My goal would be to simply gain some wizard-like abilities, but still live in this world - I love technology too much to leave it behind.

How would I attempt to deal with him? I'd start off with, "Who are you, and why the hell are you creating a portal in a random geek's bedroom?"

I suppose I'd offer him a deal, maybe like, "If you train me and allow me to stay here, I'll cross over and assist you when you need it." Or something.

What I'd really like in this world is the ability to remotely manipulate computers... oh, the fun that would be. Wall street tycoon, ho!

Its a good point about making a deal with the wizard... afterall you dont want to be a modern human with modern human stats in a fantasy world. Worse you dont speak the language and you dont have any very useful skills. Dare I say commoner ?

Well, modern man has one advantage. He has the skill to acquire skills. Also a modern man might know how to put other people's skills to full advantage.

Curious... It's not, but what if the world of our choosing was the World of Darkness? :) Would that still involve leaving friends and family behind, since... well... it's the same world and all? I could be a werewolf or mage without problem... thought I wouldn't choose WoD... the world is always about to end. That's no way to live... I would be grey from stress in three years.

Wait until you start explaining some of our "miracles", and how to make them work... you know, steam power, oil mining, etc etc... then apply wizard-power to old techniques! You would be heralded as the comming of a new era in the world that never seems to evolve :)

Yeah, like that guy in that book by Mark Twain. "A man from Massachusetts in King Arthur's Court" or whatever it was called. He really trashed those knights, didn't he?

Actualy, the title is A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court ... though I confess to not having read the book. One of those books that I've always meant to read...
