Would you pay for a character?

To me the burden is not of creating characters but rather to tie them up together. That takes a very long time. I wouldn't "buy" a single NPC for any price (and me too like to build up characters, and think it's one of the best part of the game), but I maybe would if they were a group of characters, although I would be afraid that I may not feel like they are "mine". Obviously I am talking from the DM's point of view.

Nope... not where there are character generator programs all over the place that make character creation super easy. With a few clicks you can create a full blown character of any level with Redblade.

Well, Malhavoc's Bonds of Magic has already been published. I like the product myself.

I think a product might sell if it had a large amount of characters:

1. Fully statted
2. with an intriguing background
3. with high-quality artwork for each character

Yes, much of this is available for free on the net, but having it in one place and done professionally is good.

I could see such a product being a seller as a PDF.

That's the important part there... the part one would actually might spend money on.

1.) is just a bonus.

Hard to say.

I like the fully-statted bit myself becasue it allows me to drop the character as an NPC in game with little work.

Of course ideally I would tailor each NPC; and certainly player's would tailor their PCs. As a DM sometimes I don't have the time.

I like to create characters a lot. For beginners: it makes them understand how the character fits into story and rules and is key to understand how you translate what somebody thinks his character is like and how the character behaves into game terms/rules/... . As advanced player and/or DM I like to sit down with my DM respective player to create a character and build it up, adding to the background while filling in the charactersheet. (e.g. rolling base stats will immediatly give you a mental image of the character: strong and wise but lacks inteligence and is butt-ugly...)

So, would I buy such a collection of PC's? Nope, or actualy maybe, but to me that would just be a list of NPC's. I would consider a character created by a player (or player+DM) a PC and a character from any other source (collection, net, program, publication, ...) an NPC (even if the character is played by a player). You could say that a PC then means "character created by player" and NPC "character not created by player".
The only purchase I would consider in relation to PC's ( this time meaning characters played by players) would be a program that generates a "PC" on the fly with equipment and background outline. This would be used for on the fly PC's and for cons/one-offs/demo's. (since I use a laptop at the table, I would prefer a program, also because you would be able to create a lot more variation than would be possible in any publication. just think about it: a phonebook size publication containing a dozen different pc's of all possible combinations of class/race/prc...)

Hell, no! How do I know the person creating the character is up to my level of munchkinism? What if the creator is unable to squeeze every little mechanical advantage out of the rules? Suppose he doesn't understand how to throw together feats and equipment for a dozen different books so as to be able to cause 500 hp of damage in one round using a free action, a tanglefoot bag, a 2nd lvl spell and a rubber chicken? No way, jose!

Jokes aside, I enjoy creating PCs (and NPCs) and if I'm going to be running one, I would definitely prefer to be the one creating it. Sure, if a DM wanted me to run a pre-generated PC for some reason I would, but paying for one when I can just create it myself doesn't work for me.

I just don't see this working at all.

For one thing, there are endless 'stat monkeys' out there who would love nothing more than to create characters for you for free. I bet here you could post something like 'need 5th level cleric' and you would get about 25 free responses and various different types of characters by friendly gamers wanting to help out.

For another reason, I just don't see how the person creating the characters could justify the work in question for 50 cents a level.
