Would you pay for a character?

I think I've already seen something like this in a product... Friday Night Six Pack... Saturday Night Six Pack... its been a couple of years and the name now fails me...
For those who know the products I'm talking about... weren't they pre-generated characters for sale?

A Caveat or Two

Your welcome.

Unfortunately, the site doesn't offer two of the things discussed above. Namely, a background and gear.

Well, you get what you pay for, and that one is free. ;)

On another note, does anyone know where to find ANSI art for free? If so email me: welder12@hotmail.com

One of the biggest problems with pre-gen characters for sale, in my opinion, is that this method of obtaining a character would not truly allow one the broad selection of customizable features that 3.0/3.5 allows....
But then if a person is simply happy having someone else make thier characters then it possibly likely that they could care less to add any sense of input to their character growth or at least initial development.

No, but that is because I usually start with a character concept, and then I use the rules to design the concept. I don't really care if I've created the most effective character, but I do try to create something that will be a somewhat useful party member. I usally make a detailed background along with a strong motivation for adventuring. I've seen very few published characters that had the crazy types of background stories that I usually create.

Full characters, no. But I'd gladly shell out the quoted figure of $.50 per level for a level and class appropriate listing of PC equipment. I hate equipping PCs more than anything else about playing D&D.

Though come to think of it, some suggested packages of skills for Rogues and d20 Modern characters would probably be worth the same in terms of what I'd pay. Last time I tried to build a Smart Hero in Modern I had more skill points available than I had any idea what to do with.

Would you go to a website to buy characters that have been created from a certain set of standards. Do you think such a site makes sense?

You could have characters of all types and backrounds ready across all classes. Optimized, Spread Thin, Carefully Balanced, no crazy minmaxing or over powering. Everything set out for you. Stats, Equipment, spells. Optional Backrounds...

Would it be custom-made to suit my homebrew setting and house rules?

Would it come with a family tree that fits into my setting's history, and does not conflict with any other family tree, and includes a bunch of ancestral secrets?

Because sure, I'd pay $0.50 each for a bunch of high-quality NPCs... which would probably work out to about $1.00/hour for you. Want the job?

Who knows?

Maybe you could sell books with titles like "101 fighters," or "101 wizards." You could do a variety of levels, races, and combinations of skills and feats. DMs could plop them into existing campaigns.

I think that this hits onto a "better" idea in itself. 1d100 fighters for levels 1-20. That would be 2,000 stat-blocks. It's rediculous, but I think that it would be more useful than just buying NPCs. Let me show an example of what I think this could look like from the Rogues Gallery.

(After looking at link)

I, personally, could see this done for occupations rather than classes. 1d100 blacksmiths over levels 1-20. 1d100 Bartenders over levels 1-20. 1d100 Adventurers over levels 1-20.

Certainly not a guaranteed sell, but I wouldn't mind just rolling 1d100 for a thorp on the 2nd level bartender lists to see what I get. With a proper background and such, and certain small plot hooks, I would probably use it on a regular basis.

Sure, but then you're selling mini-adventures. Which is very cool, but only tangential to selling NPCs.

I'd much rather buy "NPC Personality with plot hooks" than "NPC stat block with equipment".
