Would you pay for a character?

...Certainly not a guaranteed sell, but I wouldn't mind just rolling 1d100 for a thorp on the 2nd level bartender lists to see what I get. With a proper background and such, and certain small plot hooks, I would probably use it on a regular basis.

For everything but adventurers, just buy Everyone Else - I pimp this product a lot because it is great - just about every non-PC class profession you can think of, at multiple levels and styles.

I just don't see this working at all.

For one thing, there are endless 'stat monkeys' out there who would love nothing more than to create characters for you for free. I bet here you could post something like 'need 5th level cleric' and you would get about 25 free responses and various different types of characters by friendly gamers wanting to help out.

For another reason, I just don't see how the person creating the characters could justify the work in question for 50 cents a level.
Yeahyeah, want me to make you a character?

I'd pay for character artwork definetely, but not for character stats. IMO players must create their characters in order to get familiar with them at start.

I use NPC generator to create unimportant NPCs (bartenders, opponents, ...), while I like to create more important ones manually.

That cheap! Sure why not? But £5 quid for a level 20 character is a bit too much for me though.

I don't think it makes much sense considering the utilities that are already available (for free).

While I, too, find making characters to be an absolutely despicable use of my time, I just use good ol' Jamis Buck's generator(s) - saves me a lot of pain and suffering.

When I need an NPC, I use Jamis Buck's NPC generator, followed by the NPCGear program to equip him. I might have to do a little tweaking if a particular weapon doesn't match the NPC's skills and feats, but that's not bad.

And I usually have the background figured out (as much as I need) when I decide I need to make an NPC. At that point, I'm just looking to save time on all the stat crunching and table rolling.

As long as there are free alternatives, there won't be a viable NPCs for $$$ market. The competition with freebies forces the price down so much that you won't get your money back.

No, I wouldn't use it. I don't see the point. It only takes a couple minutes to make a character so why pay for it?

Heh...maybe for a one shot, personally, when I'm creating a character that I'm going to use for a while, it takes me HOURS...my record is 21 pages of information, not including history. Personally, I wouldn't buy characters, I enjoy making them too much, I do it for fun even when I don't have any reason to make one. If they had a compilation book of lots of characters that wasn't fantastically expensive (none of those $40 things) I might buy it to use as NPCs in one shots or in an area where the NPCs don't matter in the overall campaign, or maybe just to get purty ideas for my own characters. Now...WRITING a book like that, on the other hand...I could go for that
