Would you play D&D if the sacred cows were sacrificed?

D&D 4th ed. has gotten rid of the Sacred Cows of D&D (AC, hit points etc)

After all, if you don't like the rules, why not play something else?
For the amount of time I actually dedicate to gaming, it's much easier to use something familiar than go through the bother of trying something new, only to try something else and then go back to D&D. :)

For classes DnD 4e only needs the D20 mechanic and the basic class set - Fighter, Expert, Magic-User (maybe even just one 'Base Class' as an option in the DMG)

and then as far as I'm concerned whole paddocks of bovine carnage can take place in favour of a levelless customisable "Skills and Feats" system incorporating a Damage Save.

That would be kewl

d00d. . . True20 much?

Arrr, matey the system would have to remain DnD for sure. Without there being any classes, level, and hp it just wouldn't be the same. AC I can see needing a revamp to bring it under control, but it must also remain. The magic system I'mn totally in favor of revamping to a Arcana Evolved sytem though. Tis an elegant sytem that allows for greater flexability in the spell casters while maintaining the overall spells themselves.

But touch my classes and we'll have to be talking about a keel hauling, arr! ;)

Depends on the cow:

Some of them I would protect with my dying breath (Classes, levels, hp)

Some of them I don't care that much about (AC vs Armor as DR)

Some of them I'd be the one to fire up the grill (Vancian magic - I just don't like it)

I think that the poll is not correctly stated, because (IMNSHO) AC and hit points don't truly qualify as sacred cows. For me to consider it D&D it has to have ability scores (although the "subabilities" from Skills & Powers may have their place), races (including elves & halflings), classes, and levels.

AC, hp, HD as such, and Vancian magic are all expendable, as has been amply demonstrated by the new Unearthed Arcana, as well as several publications from other companies.

Cheers,

"Would you manage to survive in a post-apocalyptic world?"

I have the same answer to both questions: I might, but I have no way of knowing until it happens, and I hope I never get tested in such a manner. :)

Mmm, if classes, level and HP are kept. Probably want all the other luggage, such as the core spell list and races. I'd off AC and the "number of spells slots" stuff immediately. Considering the current rules, I'd love to have Ability scores chucked out as well and use +/- modifiers instead.

I think the game has to evolve slowly. So some cows can be killed, but not too many and not too quickly. They have to be careful not to destroy what works. There is a quite of bit that does work in 3.5E, even if it's not perfect.

I don't think classes and levels should ever go.
