Wrestling coming to the Sci-Fi channel?

I haven't read anything about it, but I've seen promos which clearly indicate it so, "ECW", which I don't know what stands for, but is definitely wrestling, as I've seen it during ads for wrestling pay per view events.

Many of the shows they show is really a stretch to call sci-fi. But how can they possibly call Wrestling sci-fi? I know it gets great ratings, but yikes.

Trance,

This has been going on behind the scenes for the past couple of months. My understanding (limited as it is), USA networks (including Sci-fi) agreed to let Vince McMahon try out ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling, basically it's wrestling with tables, chairs, and lots of violence and blood), after he decided to "ressurrect" it for his own profits. ECW is affilated with WWE but much like S&SS is distributor and promoter, WWE has no control over what gets shown.

Is this Sci-fi? Hardly. But I guess they are dying for ratings. There you are.

Why not have wrestling with a sci-fi element though? Like say, the game Rumble Roses? That has cyborgs. Or do some licensing and have a Klingon wrestle a Narn?

Well, I think the trouble is, networks get pulled two ways. They start out trying to cater to a niche, but then they decide they want bigger ratings, and so stop showing stuff that fits into their niche and try to go to a mainstream audience.

IMHO, maybe there needs to be another channel devoted to science fiction and maybe another one devoted to horror, so the current one can change their name to Spike Two (or something)

Trance,

Mostly because pro wrestling attracts more fans than the niches that Sci-fi could ever get on its own. That and I think the Sci-fi channel is hoping, with greater exposure and better revenue, they can continue to cater to Sci-fi.

Horror and the rest are not the problem. The fact is Sci-fi shows other than a few hits do not constitute a large enough revenue to keep Sci-fi afloat. At least that's the way it seems.

Sci-fi wrestling would just be like other shows like Psychic at Large, or some other "reality" show that has failed a lot on Sci-fi. (Anyone remember the one with all those weirdos like the voodoo priestess, the nudist, the vampire etc?)

Aaron,

Yes Sci-fi is a whore but that's TV. They're all whores and slaves to ratings.
