Wrestling coming to the Sci-Fi channel?

I think it was a month or so ago Sci-Fi also showed a bunch of Law & Order SVUs that they claimed were "wierd" or something.

I think they were serial killer episodes, so that they could tie into some kind of "thriller" theme.

Anyway, I'm kind of torn about this. It really doesn't belong on Sci-Fi, but I used to like wrestling until I grew disenchanted with WWE, so I'd like to see the return of ECW (provided it's like the original ECW, not just another WWE show). I started to get into TNA, but then they brought in all the guys that ruined WCW (Nash, Steiner, Luger, and Bagwell). It would be nice to look forward to a wrestling show again.

Actually, I'm kind of shocked that Adult Swim doesn't have a pro-wrestling show, the way they're running things now.

They also started showing a soap called "Passions" which in no way is science fiction either. Of course if you really get down to it, the ghost "reality" shows like Ghost Hunters and such aren't really sci-fi either. The ECW thing is just another attempt (ala the Law and Order thing) to maximize their investment in the syndication rights for these shows. They own, might as well hit as much of an audience as they can. Sadly, they are going away from what made me like em so. Bad sci-fi movies are so much better than this stuff they are adding now that has nothing at all to do with it. At least the John Doe show they've been airing recently has something remotely Sci-Fi-ish about it. I'll wait and keep watching my Friday and Saturday DVR'ed stuff, but once they start blotting that stuff out for this drek, I'm done with em.

Actually Sci-Fi didn't even want ECW on their channel, it was a decision made by the higher ups at USA. USA didn't want it on their station because it isn't a proven national product. Taking out the USA owned news channels you're left with BRAVO and Sci-Fi.

Besides, it is still expected to be the highest rated show on the channel. And I at least will be watching.

Trance,

Mostly because pro wrestling attracts more fans than the niches that Sci-fi could ever get on its own. That and I think the Sci-fi channel is hoping, with greater exposure and better revenue, they can continue to cater to Sci-fi.

Horror and the rest are not the problem. The fact is Sci-fi shows other than a few hits do not constitute a large enough revenue to keep Sci-fi afloat. At least that's the way it seems.

Well, I think the thing is, the owners of the Sci-Fi channel don't want it just to stay "afloat", they want to make more money.

This is very common in cable. A lot of times a channel starts out catering to some sort of niche, but then gets bought out by a bigger company or wants to change focus (mostly to cater to the all important young adult demographic).

OTOH, some channels seem merely content to stay small time and true to what they are. You would never see Wrestling on TCM.

Yeah, Empty V is also getting into the wrasslin' show biz too. But Sci Fi's had wrasslin' for awhile or at least whenever a Godzilla (or Gamera) movie played. "Up from the depths, 30 stories high..." I would like to see wrasslin' on the Food Network - Iron Chef judges get a color commentary from Ol' JR / Joey Styles, etc. I'm sure a few wrestlers might actually know how to cook too.

Maybe they're running out of sci fi stuff on Sci Fi channel since Spike has the Star Trek franchise and most other sci fi-ish shows have ended / canned (Farscape, Brimstone, X Files, etc) but maybe Blade will go to Sci Fi after syndication.

Sheesh. Cartoon Network should let some anime go over (Cowboy Bebop or even Megas XLR for example) and I do remember seeing Samurai 7 on IFC (I think) on Saturdays.

Yes, I'll be watching. Kinda wonder if the Dudley Boyz will hop over to ECW on occasion but doubtful since they're prolly PO'd at Vince and WWE.

Supposedly its a 12 week deal, and if it does good enough in the ratings, it will probably move over to USA. Supposedly the only sci fi type thing they will have is a vampire faction, and gangrel will probably be the leader of that faction. If Sci Fi really wanted wrestling, they would probably get something like that kaiju big battle stuff that G4 has on in the mornings with the cartoons.
