I guess this has been asked a hundred times before, but when is XP given to a character that dies, and then gets resurrected? Before raising? Or after?

Normally before he dies I would say. However you could get som experience when your death if some people did talk with you (speak with dead) a lot of times, but that would be unneccesary :P

Experience arent a sudden boost of inner power if you should think a bit realistic, just like in real-life. (Yes I know it's D&D and it cant be compared to reality, just leave it there, it make sense in my opinion :P.)

Tot up all the experience he earned up until the moment he died, and add it to his total before he gets Raised. If that would've been enough to put him up a level, then start him at the halfway point for XP at his current level. If not, start him at the halfway point for XP at one level lower.

Since the level loss for dying and coming back is enough of a penalty, I'd give the player the benefit of getting the XPs after being raised. But then, I'm an old softie.

If the XPs would have been enough to push him up a level if awarded before dying, you've just done him a disfavour.

It could depend on the timing of the awarding of experience.

If the DM awards experience at the end of each encounter, then the dead dude gets dudded. He is awarded xps, but can't gain a level through suitable rest or training (assuming he gained sufficient xps to level) and then loses a level on raising.

If the DM awards experience at the end of a session or significant goal, then the problem isn't so severe (particularly when a lower level character gains more experience, based on the xp charts).
