XP Cost for multi classing

This is a very rough idea, so please bare with me. THis would replace the favored class or go along with it. Not sure yet.

Now, this is really for those who feel it's to easy to multi class. It is supposed to be ewasy, but by making it so easy it does get abused. We all know that. Like some people I like training rules, especially for multi classing. Otherwise it doesn't make a lot of sense how the 3rd level commoner all of a sudden can use all simple and martial weeapon, and all type of armor in zero time.

I guess it's time to get to the idea before I ramble too much and lose all of you to disinterest.

To multi class you need to spend an amount of XP equal to your character level times 500. This XP is spent to aquire the class, just like spending to make magical weapons.

This will at least keep some people from just taking one level of something. Who knows? Maybe it won't. Maybe it's a worthless idea. Just a random thought I got why trying to crash a message board today.

I'd still pay it for one level of Ranger. I'd still pay it to have my first level be rogue and then change to whatever class I intended to play. I'd still pay it for anything I needed one level of a class to accomplish.

But doesn't seem to be to bad of a ruling IF you felt the need to make one.

I don't know if it's needed or not. Thr purpose is to not let people multi class or to discourage, it's to place an obvious price on it to make them think a little before doing it.

They'll still do it this would just make them complain more.

Well, my players don't complain. They have a problem we discuss it. It's so nice to play with mature people. I think if I had to deal with whiners at this stage I'd go out of my way to make them feel unwanted.

A 3rd level commoner didn't learn how to fight all of a sudden. He earned 3000 XP going from commoner 3 to commoner 3 fighter 1. That's when he learned to use weapons.

Actual training time makes more sense. A wizard doesn't lose any additional XP for taking months to create items besides the direct investiture of essence, but the additional time for multiclassing does require more XP?

There already is a XP cost for multiclassing. It can just be greatly reduced (often to 0) by using favored classes and keeping the levels even. However, it's still there.

The only multiclassing abuse I see involves prestige classes.

I like training rules and will use them. Unless the cmapign callse for downtime (not all do) the common might very well never have used anything other then a single simple weapon and no armor. There is no gaurnetee that within earning the 3000 xp he got the training. Time is the key element, but XP is hitting the Pcs were it hurts. Like I said, rough idea I'm just getting a feel on. THanks for the feedback.
