XP for Missing Players

Wraith,

If you use their characters, then they deserve half XP. The worst thing that a GM did to me was use my character, kill him off that night, and award me zero XP. Egad, he lost a level too!

Did I mention that they were gaming at MY house while I spent the night upstairs being violently ill from food poisoning?

I was not amused.

I 'used' their characters in that they were present and had a minor impact on the game. I played them ULTRA conservatively, expended only a few spells and one wand charge, and made sure that short of a TPK they would be unharmed.

Hardly worth writing home about.

No worries, I am just saying that I generally give half xp is I use their PCs during the game. However, if the excuse was poor or they make a habit out of not showing up, then I make no effot to use their characters and they no xp.

Many have responded they give full XP because they want players to be equal. What about character death? Everyone get a true res or no coming back?
i don't kill PCs.

Heh... you wouldn't like my game, then. If players don't show up, the character gets no XP, is *still* in the party (controlled by another player), and is often close to the action.

Thankfully my players show up 99.99% of the time...

Very interesting. Our group has never even considered giving XP for a character that wasn't there. He wasn't fighting the fights, why get the XP? It's never proven to be a balance issue, and it's very fair. We play the same night every week. If you can't make it, oh well. The character slips behind a little. Not that big a deal, really.

Mind. Boggling.

Adventuring without fear of death? Its like chutes and ladders without the chutes!
actually, it's more like being in an action movie. you know the main heroes aren't going to die, but that doesn't make the movie any less enjoyable.

for myself and most of my players, PCs dying would make the game less enjoyable. we don't need "the fear of character death" in order to have fun.

Idiotic choices on the part of my players kill their PCs
luckily, i've been blessed with players who don't make those kinds of choices. ;)

Where's the illusion of fear? My players require the fear of character death.
the players i've gamed with over the years haven't had any problems role-playing their characters being afraid of death even though as players they knew my DMing style.
