Yawning Portal For Eberron

There is advice in the book for running the adventures in Eberron, but I suggest taking a bit of time to gut and replace with things that feel like Eberron.

I often hear of people running Red Hand of Doom, Rise of the Runelords, or Shattered City... but they don't feel like Eberron. Eberron isn't the best fit for running a 'traditional' module. The best parts of Eberron are the unique elements of it. If you want it to feel like Eberron, you need to build on those elements, not just tack them on as an afterthought.

I spent some time this weekend really going through the Eberron material I have and the module itself and here is what I have come up with:

The citadel is located in Breland near the border of Darguun and not far from New Cyre. It was a an ancient goblin empire outpost and when it was destroyed and sunk by the daelkyr, the tree was born. The fruit is more lovecraftain in nature than in the module: eating it creates a link to the daelkyr and begins to mutate you.

New Cyre will stand in for Oakhurst. It will be a good way to lean into the fact that the Last War was devastating for all the nations of Khorvaire, but especially Cyre. Goblin bandits who were once Breland mercenaries have taken up residence in the Citadel and have been harassing the already too few traders willing to come to New Cyre, so Prince Oargev has put out a bounty on them, dead or alive. The citizens of New Cyre have no idea what precisely the Citadel is or what sits at the bottom.

I'm still struggling with the kobolds a little, since I am not well versed in Eberron's draconic lore (I never owned Dragons of Eberron, or Races which i presume talks about kobolds). I am going to paint them as strange cultists that worship a dragon but aren't especially evil anyway, and try and guide the PCs to aligning with them rather than murdering them all. But, of course, you never know.

As an aside, there will be a dwarven ambassador from the Mror Holds in New Cyre trying to make an alliance (aka business deal) with the Prince. If the PCs are successful in dealing with the Citadel, he is going to offer them work at home -- freeing a recently discovered outpost of Noldrunhold that contains The Forge of Fury.
