(YB Meta) Style Match Variants

Ciaran

First Post
Here are a few ideas for variant Style match formats in YB!. I’m posting them mainly because there are a few I’d like to try out myself, but I’m also interested in getting some feedback. Note that the last four serve a useful purpose in that they avoid much of the “second fighter wins” problem inherent in style matches, where the fighter who goes second can base his move on taking advantage of weaknesses in the first fighter’s move.

No Special Effects: The fighters may not use magic, psychic powers, or anything else that would be impossible in the real world.

Magic Only: The traditional sorcerer’s duel, where anything goes except for crude physical combat.

Pure Style: Instead of attacking each other, the participants show off their skill and technique by performing flashy freestyle martial arts moves. This can be pretty tricky to play out, especially when combined with the No Special Effects variant.

Target Dummy: Participants beat up on target dummies instead of on each other.

Live Targets: As above, but the participants show off their skills by butchering helpless peasants and the like. Light and Honor Path fighters are advised to avoid this one.

Cooperative: The fighters join forces to attack an NPC opponent of the judge’s creation. Note that the opponent is a narrative device rather than an actual YB! fighter; whoever has the stronger move is the one who damages the NPC.

Hmm, bit inclined against these as actual 'types', although maybe inclusion in the rules file (With a nice big disclaimer saying that they can only be used by agreement of both fighters), mostly as I don't want to see a Dark Pather force someone else into breaking their 'character concept' because of being forced to a specific type of style match (or for that matter, a light pather getting forced into live targets).

Reiella,

You have the right of it, on all counts. These sorts of variations require mutual agreement on the part of all players, and are probably best used as part of a challenge (e.g. "I'm looking for a magic-only, target dummy Style match; any takers?")

These seem neat ideas for some of my characters.

Bright Necromancer basically oncly uses magic, anyway.

Vengeful Lemur is just . . . well . . . a lemur.

And Sahiro Tso-Nah wouldn't mind trouncing innocents . . . mass bounty hunting spree!

Right now, BN is the only free one. I'd be happy to test out the Magic Only match with one of your characters, Ciaran, if we can find a judge.
