The ground grows rocky and starts to slope upward as the mounted party climbs into the pass to Redrock Vale. The sounds of battle grow louder. You hear a shattering bang, followed by smells of smoke and ozone. Somewhere, something unnatural laughs.

The paladin reaches back and tugs your gag free. "At this stage," he states, shouting to be heard over the din, "the question of your status becomes moot. Spy or no, I'll not leave you helpless here, to be slaughtered if I fall. It will be the work of a moment to set you free. All I ask is your word of honor that you'll fight alongside us, not the demons out of the Vale. What say you?"

"Very well," he replies. "Bide a moment." You hear his blade scrape from its scabbard. Then all sound is drowned in the noise of battle as his steed bears you both into the thick of the fray.

Craning your neck, you catch flashes of mailed figures amidst wreaths of smoke, of spears and swords glittering silver and red, of human and orcish faces alike grimacing with fear, rage and pain. Metal clashes only feet away from you, leaving you feeling terribly vulnerable. Then the paladin draws to a halt against a wall of rock, leans back, and slices your bonds with quick, economical strokes. Your wrists and ankles burn with renewed circulation as you slide gracelessly to the ground.

"Here," he says, unstrapping a mace from beside his saddle and pressing it into your hand as you rise. "I trust you can use this. Should we prevail, seek out Master Lavigne, the fellow with the flashy tricks that rode with us; he holds the rest of your gear. May Sarras guide your hand and spare you from peril!" With that, he sets spurs to his horse and rides off. A cliff face is at your back; in all other directions, you can barely distinguish the forms of struggling warriors amidst the thickening smoke. Red light lashes the sky uphill, toward the top of the pass.

(This will work according to Wicht's mass combat rules - abilities of Monderefal's opponents will not be posted, but their remaining hits will. At any one time, I will post up to five combatants in your area, though not all will necessarily be attacking you. Assuming he lives through the battle, Monderefal will receive 1 hit defeated for each hit of damage he manages to dish out in the fight. If an attack can inflict more than one hit of damage, the relevant style or location will be italicized. The paladin's mace gives you +2 to mace moves.)

Moving towards the sound of battle, you quickly arrive upon a skirmish between orcs and soldiers of the attacking army. The human soldiers seem to be faring poorly; they stand over the corpses of two of their comrades, with their backs to the wall of the pass. A dead orc indicates that the fight is not entirely one-sided.

Before the orcs realize what’s happening, you smash the skull of the first orc with a single blow. The next orc is more alert, however, and parries your second attack. The surviving orcs finish off one of the soldiers before turning against you, though not before one takes a wound from the remaining soldier. Another orc appears out of the smoke to flank you.

As the new orc bounds towards you, spear flashing, you calmly deflect its blow with one swipe of your mace and bash the orc soundly on the backstroke. In the meantime, the remaining soldier impales another orc, leaving it lifeless. In the fracas, you take 1 hit of damage from an orc's blow.
