So, having seen them mentioned several times in threads about Deep Horizons and Savage Species, I finally dug out my MM2 and took a good look at the Desmodu race. Like many people, I was baffled at WOTC's continuing attempts to make the desmodu the Next Big Thing, but the one thing I really wonder is:
Why on Earth would you make a race of bat people that can't fly?
Think about it. Doesn't it sort of defeat the purpose of a race of bat people? They can't even really glide, just fall slightly better.
I mean, what are the first things you think of when you think of a bat? They fly around and use sonar. Everything else - the largely insectivorous diet, the living in caves, the ability to use their guano to make gunpowder - all of that can be changed without removing the batlike feel of the race. If you drop the sonar or the flight, then why bother making them bats at all?
The desmodu to me are like someone saying "Let's make a race of fish-people that don't swim any better than humans do!" or "Hey, do these mole people really need the ability to dig? Nah. Let's give them some kewl double weapons instead."
