That would be Thomson and Thompson, actually. The joke is in the spelling, they aren’t actually twins.

RacerX from Speed Racer but I don't know the band, TinTin I know of the classic comic but not the band. The Thompson Twins and Mott the Hoople I know the bands but not the references.

Without Googling I think Steve Morse was in RacerX and Mott the Hoople wrote "All the Young Dudes" but David Bowie and Bruce Dickinson did versions of it? But no clue on the comic book references either.

You'd be surprised how some bands got their name. Jimmy Page was talking with a few people about putting together a super-group when Keith Moon chimed in, "That'll go over like a Lead Zeppelin". Shortly after Led Zeppelin I was released they got sued by the German Zeppelin family, and had to pay them to use their name.

A friend of mine started a band and needed a name, so he opened a phone book (remember those?), pointed and the last name was Rockwood, so there you have it and "Rockwood" was born.

@Ryujin had it almost right, but missed an intervening step. The band got their name from Manus's novel title. But THAT was in turn a reference to "Martha Hoople" (as mentioned above).

I was close, I think? Bowie did a version, but I remember hearing it way before 1994, I'm confused was that Mott the Hoople doing their best Bowie impression. Bruce Dickinson covered it in 1990 on Tattooed Millionaire, and I know I heard Bowies version of it before that. But according to Wikipedia it wasnt released until 1994.

BONUS POINTS: Bruce Dickinsons' record Tattooed Millionaire was named while divorcing his wife after finding out she was sleeping with Frank Carlton Serafino Feranna Jr...AKA Nikki Sixx. Bruce made a comment something to the effect of disassociating himself from the LA glam rock party lifestyle, I'm paraphrasing, "I don't ever want to be a Tattooed Millionaire".
