You ever argue XP with a DM?

Here's a different question, have you ever argued/questioned/inquired on how much XP you got for a session becasue you felt the amount was wrong?

Yes, but not in a harsh way, like demanding more or anything, more in a suggestive way. It's still up to the DM, of course. :)

I would never argue about XP given to the players as a group (I don't use the charts as written either). I might if it was something that targetted me specifically and without a good reason (e.g: DM- "OK guys, Balern gets 5,000 XP for the adventure, Galdri gets 6,000 XP, and Rystil gets 250 XP" Me- "Umm, wait, why did I get so few. Was I roleplaying poorly?" DM- "No, you were the best roleplayer of the group, but you got knocked out in the first round of the big battle, so you get 250 for roleplaying bonus and nothing else." Me- "But, you made the big battle a surprise ambush where 12 psion-killers attacked my psion at the same time during the surprise round." DM- "Too bad."). At that point, I might also just leave the campaign though.

If anyone has ever argued with me about XP in, oh, coming up on 25 years of gaming, I certainly can't remember it. That said, for the vast majority of our 3e gaming we've been using story-based awards anyway.

Cheers!

In our group (with rotating DMing) the DM never tells you how many XP you have.
When it's time he tells the players that their character just gained a level.
The next DM gets a small table with the last XP values for each character.
So there can't be an argument about XP.
But there are sometimes questions about the difficulty of an encounter. If it was very hard and the DM tells us we should have done it left-handed, that is.

Now, if I felt the DM were giving me more or lessss than other PCs without good cause, then I might have an issue. But if the GM is being even-handed, I have no reason to quibble.
I've had this a couple times, only one of which was really an arguement. The arguement was because of a PC that was repeatedly getting roleplaying bonuses while the rest of us didn't. The player in question was generally disruptive and it irked most of the rest of us, then his behaviour was rewarded. The player left before that game ended, and in the new game with the same DM, we all just get the same XP.

Another time, different game, I noticed that others were leveling before me when I didn't think they should have been. The DM in this one emailed out XP individually ("here's your new total"), so I asked about it, and he checked and found out there was a math error at some point.

The game I DM, I have a lose comprehension of where the players are, XP-Wise, and just tell them to level when needed. Eventually I'll add it all up, but I'm too busy now. Or at least thats what I tell the players in between playing Spider Solitaire. :)

Another DM gives out levels when sufficiently nagged that we haven't leveled in a while. We have a designated Nagger for just this task.

Argue? Never.

Question? Yes.

Like when you get what seems to be way too much, or way too little, I may raise an eyebrow and say something about it, but it never goes beyond that.

I've never had a problem with GMs who want to give out less than standard Exps as long as they're consistent and even-handed about it.

I don't think I've ever seen a situation where one PC gets crapped upon in the Exp department. If it were to occur, not only would I expect the player to complain about it, I would be right there backing him up (assuming it wasn't me). That just isn't right.

In 20+ years of DMing I think that I didn't had a single session where players didn't comment on the XP.

Maybe because I am lazy and usually give XP right away, letting the player do the accounting.

XP issues only come up periodically. Usually when a character is just shy of achieving a level up. Then the begging begins. The character is usually able to level when this happens.

I've never really seen an argument follow from experience questions. It just seems pointless to argue with the DM because even if you 'win' the argument, you are probably going to 'lose' somewhere else down the road. Not saying our DMs are petty, but they are people making judgment calls and do have bias.

Other than some teasing when the DM leaves my character just short of gaining a level ("Okay, first thing next week, I'm killing an orc"), I don't think I've ever argued XP with the DM. What's the point?
