You ever argue XP with a DM?

We've had one arguement about XP in the years I've played. Basically the DM wanted to run one of those really slow leveling games, something like one level per few months. Unfortunately nobody playing in the game liked that idea, so we brought it up to him and it turned into a small arguement.

Another player in the same group I was in a long time ago did. She whined that he wasn't being fair. So he told her that her character was getting less XP. She whined again. He told her that she wasnt getting any XP. She threw afit. He told her that her character was now one level lower. She screamed. He told her to take off another level. Before she could have another outburst he said "Keep whining and complaining and I'll continue to take levels off your character". She shut up.

After that night, I vowed to never say a word to any DM about the amount of XP my character got.

I had a disagreement with a DM on how much XP he had given me, not whether it was a good amount or not (I'm still convinced I was right). In my next campaign I implemented a more thorough system for tracking XP to avoid such things.

Also had a disagreement over hom starting one player with more XP than the others because he was the "leader".

As for arguing whether session XP is "right" I don't think I ever have. We always used generally free-form experience. If do well you level up fast. When I DMed we had a few minor such concerns but no serious arguments. If the DM does his job and the players aren't jerks such problems shouldn't occur.

I haven't ever argued it. I might, if things were really screwy (wait, why am I 5 levels below everyone else), but there hasn't been a reason for me to do it yet.

The only arguments we've had is with DM's who don't give out XP's. We have one DM who still owes the group for five modules that she's run, going as far back as 1995. Another DM owes us now for two modules, one from 2002 the other from 2004. The other players don't complain because I am the primary DM, running about two-thirds of the games, and always give out XP's so all of their characters are close to where they should be. The one who looses out is me since these are among the few times I get to play. I have one character who is a 2nd level fighter/2nd level wizard that probably should now be fifth level in each as she's owed experience for five of seven modules referenced above.

I wouldn't argue... but do ask sometimes. Get handed out xp - usually with an explanation of what it's for. If there's something else I felt was xp-worthy, that didn't get mentioned, I'll point it out and ask. If the answer is no, then drop the subject.

When I DM, the players generally do the same thing. I find it helpful in case I forgot anything.

Do find people get more creative and persistent with their asking when they're just shy of the next level. Ah well, can't blame them for trying. :D

Here's a different question, have you ever argued/questioned/inquired on how much XP you got for a session becasue you felt the amount was wrong?

With the CR system it is easy for anyone to look up how much XP monsters are worth for the levels of the PCs and do the math. I know some DMs to alter the XP they award and sometimes they don't inform the players of it before hand. So, I can see the situation coming up in games.

Never argue with the DM. Rinse and Repeat.
Exceptions: If you must argue with a DM, be incredibly polite about it. :]

Argue...no. Question...yes. I have yet to play with anyone (save in my od&d days) who has used the xp rules as written. Including me. I have had arguments from players before because I was rewarding xp based on a complex grading system--that I failed to mention before hand...oops. But, that ended well 'cause I sat down and explained it to them and all but one person thought it was a great method. Currently I'm trying the one level per four session method...jury's out still. Overall, a DM should be open and players should be thankful. That's how I feel about most game related situations.

I've argued with lots of DMs about lots of things, but never XP. I'll object if the DM blue-bolts a character or has his beholders fire their eye-rays into their own anti-magic field. You know, blatant stuff like that. ;)

I can't recall anybody arguing with me about XP when I'd run games, either.
