You roll a 3...

I don't roll stats for campaign play in 3e/4e/PF. Stats are just too important in those games to allow them to be dictated by chance. (And also, a DM 'forcing' a player to use stats he's really not happy with is a warning sign in my eyes - it's not a deal-breaker, but...)

For a one-shot, I'd go for a half-orc barbarian (dragonborn fighter in 4e) and dump Int. But only because that's the character that appeals to me at the moment; for a one-shot I'm more or less happy to play anything.

(I did once run an all-kobold one-shot where one play did roll a 3. IIRC, he dumped Int.)

when you are rolling up a character, along with: 14, 16, 17, 18, 18.
The GM says you have to play the character.

Where do you put the 3? Why? What character do you make?

As far as where to put it? It depends on what type of character you want to play. I would probably put it into WIS. Why? You could play a very intelligent character that has no common sense. That could be fun. You could roleplay the heck out of that and probably be the life of the party, so to speak.

He'd be booksmart but absolutely no common sense. Almost too literal. Think of the possibilities!

I'd give him a decent CHA (and with those other rolls, you can't avoid it), so that he's likeable.

And, of course, you'll want to build a character that does not use WIS based skills.

It's not impossible. Just a bit unlikely. ;)

It's just a hypothetical, the idea being that you have this great array that will allow you to create whatever character you want, but you have this albatross that you have to put somewhere.

Actually they would be pretty incredible in anyone's game!



For myself it would depend, of course, on what I wanted to play. With such high stats overall I would probably play something that needs big numbers in more than one stat to be a real beast. Maybe cleric or paladin. No MONK! Oh to be a non-useless monk! Let's see what I can come up with (will go 3.5 Monk just to get away from the 4E stuff for a while)

To clarify a bit more, some people do use the optional rule that 1s get re-rolled, some do not.

Do you have any idea of the chance of rolling 4 ones on 4d6?

It's somewhere around 0%. More accurately, it's close to 0.077%. Odds are, you'll roll that sum once in 200 throws (or there abouts).
 

Play what you want, putting that 3 anywhere except Con.
Not me. I put the 3 in Con.

And have a backup character already to go when my first PC dies within ten seconds of combat starting.

"Oh, drat. Sir Wimpsalot died already? It's a good thing I have his squire, Micky the Clever ready to jump in."
