Your favorite 1st level module?

I would have to say my favorite 1st-level modules would be:

U1 Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh

L1 Secret of Bone Hill

N1 Against the Cult of the Reptile God

(Cult is available in ESD: http://www.svgames.com/tsr9063esd.html )

Hadn't seen anyone mention Cult. Anyway- here is the blurb about it:

"Terror by night! The village of Orlane is dying. Once a small and thriving community, Orlane has become a maze of locked doors and frightened faces. Strangers are shunned, trade has withered. Rumors flourish, growing wilder with each retelling. Terrified peasants flee their homes, abandoning their farms with no explanation. Others simply disappear...

No one seems to know the cause of the decay - why are there no clues? Who skulks through twisted shadows of the night? Who or what is behind the doom that has overtaken the village? It will take a brave and skillful band of adventurers to solve the dark riddle of Orlane!

This module is designed for 4-7 characters of first through third levels. It includes a map of the village and a description of its buildings and occupants, an overland journey to a challenging underground adventure for especially brave (or foolhardy...) characters, and a list of pre-rolled first level characters."

I have to say anything from 1st Ed is my favourite.

Just nostalgia value really, even though I have only been playing RPG's for 19 years, you always love the first games you DM'd or played.

So I have to say.

Against the Cult of the Reptile god
Bone Hill
Keep on the borderlands (My first DM job)
To Find A King
Under Illefarn (Apologies to all my players who had to sit through this module as a one off game - again and again and again)

Cheers
:D

Not to sound like apompous twit, but in my experience most "adventures" are just a base to do RPing around, nearly any adventure can be tweaked, twisted and just plain tortured to create a good story, and most good players can turn a bowl of dog food into an adventure/RPing experience.

True, but some adventures offer more help in this direction than others. An adventure which doesn't describe character quirks and cool window-dressing is gonna be harder to roleplay in than one that does -- just as an adventure that doesn't give combat stats for NPCs will be harder to fight in than one that does.

With a good DM, anything can be roleplay-heavy. But some adventures lend themselves to that more than others. From what I remember about Burning Plague, opportunities to RP with NPCs are fairly limited (though not nonexistent, as I said above).

1st level thing...

Palace of teh Silver Princess.

Can't believe no one's pulled that one out! That was a fantastic game when I first started. I loved every minute of it. Then again, we also got killed before it ended. D'oh!

This is what I get for starting when I was under ten...

I am going to vote for:

N1 Against the Cult of the Reptile God

It was such a creepy module when I played it because you literally couldn't trust anyone. I had an absolute blast tracing what was going on in the town.

I also vote for:
UK2 The Sentinel
UK2 The Gauntlet

These had a very well designed mountain fortress, complete with 15' thick walls, an intriguing story line, a decent 'mini-country' set in a mountain valley, and a more epic scale than most 1st level modules.

These are pretty hard to find, though ... at least here in Canada.
