First level for full campaigns.

Fourth level for one-shots. Gives enough power to set some interesting challenges, but not so much as to have to hunt up rules during a session.

My favorite starting level is 2nd. You still get all the fun of bringing up a character, but there is much less risk of an enemy killing you with just one lucky hit.

I generally run long campaigns so I start everyone at 1st to give the players a true sense of growth and accomplishment when they look back at the end. My favorite level span is 6th-12th, so if I were to run a one-off or a short campaign, I'd start somewhere in there.

One thing about really low levels that I enjoy as a player is that it's the only time when one-hit-kills are rampant...combat can be a blast.

i prefer 3rd lvl for fresh campeigns, if we wipe (tpk) i prefer to start over on the other side, the side we first fought with characters at the same lvl as the deceased. and to finish the story around lvl 20 (in the lvl 17-23 range)
for short fun campeigns i prefer lvl 19

0-2?

What's the deal with combining 0, 1, and 2 into the same answer? I always my campaigns at 1st level. I hate to get grouped in with the 0-level people because those folks are hard-core. I was curious to see how many start at 0.

Maybe next time set up the responses as "1st to 6th", "7th", and "0th or 8th".

If you're going to intermingle "favorite for starting" and "favorite for playing" the results aren't going to be particularly meaningful. For most, I imagine these are very different things, and with some folks answering one question, and other folks answering another, you're going to get a bowl of mixed apples and oranges.

I completely agree-- the poll is flawed.

I prefer to start at 1st level. I think most people *start* at 1st level.

However, the best level for playing is 6th. The PCs are no longer fragile, they're vastly more powerful than the common man, they've got enough feats and class abilities to really play the character they have envisioned, they have access to frightening (but not reality-bending magic), their "maxxed" skills can routinely hit DC20, and so on.

6th level is the "perfect" level.

I disagree, slightly. I think 5th is the better level. At fifth, you are all of those things, plus you have a new feat to look forward to. 6th is kind of a let-down since it's two levels to a stat increase (and probably one that doesn't increase your bonus), and three levels to your next feat, you didn't get a new spell level if you're a wizard. The anticipation is always better than the acquisition :D

I'm definitely of the 4-10th is best school, though.

Pick, pick, pick.
I said the results would be "interesting." Individual "meaningful" mileage may vary, depending on how often your whine filter is changed.

Besides, Mr. Negative-Pants, there appear to be some graph bars that haven't received much appreciation regardless of the two interpretations. That, to me, is also interesting.

Bump.

I prefer to start at 6th-10th level.

However, I most enjoy playing at 15+. I like having lots of options as a player, and I enjoy being able to use my full toolbox of monsters, spells, etc. as a DM.

I absoultely loathe playing or DMing at 1st level.

I really wish you had broken up 0-2. And I agree a more focused poll for starting/playing levels would be more informative. I voted starting and of course it has to be 1st or pre-1st level for me....
