I also like what Bill Willingham is doing on Fables and Brian Vaughan is doing on Y: The Last Man.

I dropped Fables, but I really like Y: The Last Man. Forgot to mention that.

Chris Claremont is my all-time favorite. His newer stuff, not so much. But at his peak, he was pure magic and THE best superhero comic writer out there.

I'm also a fan of Alan Moore. Watchmen was just brilliant on so many levels.

And I'm surprised nobody mentioned Frank Miller yet. Dark Knight Returns, Batman Year One, Sin City, 300, Daredevil, Daredevil: Born Again and Daredevil: Man Without Fear (my personal favorite) are all outstanding works.

One more from me: Kevin Smith. Mmmmmm, Green Arrow goodness. And he did all the Jay and Silent Bob movies. In case you ever wondered about superhero genitalia, watch Mallrats. It even has Stan Lee.
Oh yeah, thats another one: Stan Lee.

As far as consistently churning out quality stories, I'd have to say that Stan Lee, Peter David (Hulk), Walt Simonson (Thor, Fantastic Four), and Chuck Dixon (Alien Legion) are among the best.

Other good writers who tend to be hit or miss are John Byrne, Frank Miller, David Micheline, Todd McFarlane, Marc Silvestri, and Chris Claremont.

I didn't list Kevin Smith in my favorite comic writers because he's so incredibly late on the second half of that Spider-Man/Black Cat mini-series "The Evil That Men Do".

I left him of the list for the same reason, and Daredevil: Hard Target. :(

MJS got left off the same list for his lateness of Rising Stars. :(
