Human

Although I would love to play a Half-Fiend Human who is fighting against his darker nature to be on the side of the angels.

If not, then a tiefling.

Unfortunately for myself, I have not really had a good "role-playing" environment to follow either the half-fiend or tiefling path. However, I did have a good couple of years playing a human with a fiendish taint, although it didn't result in any "mechanical" effects, it was a very fun role-playing experience for me.

With me it depends on what class I play, for sociable PC's, 1/2 elves, front line fighters are Dwarves, ninja like PC's I use halflings or gnomes, spell casters are either elves or humans (or a "lesser dragon" if allowed), archerer's would be elf, and things like monks are half elves or humans. I've played as a lot, so I know a lot of the tweaks for the characters I play as.

Gelati..er..wait..sorry, never mind.

Human, for the most part. I usually only play non-humans when their race is a factor in their character concept.

Tieflings --- just not the lame watered-down 3E version that haunts FR. We still prefer the spiky Planescape berks with variable appearances and abilities.

I like all of the core races, though I haven't played the shorter ones as much as the others. If I had to pick any one, it would have to be elves, since I find them the easiest to empathize with.
