What are they, where are they and why?

Silverthorne's BOT (DE):

1) Half-humanoid template makes the top of my list for the simple reason it has 3 parts- half-humans, humanoid critters (e.g. winter wolves and centipedes), and how to water down abilities so that the half template you want to apply doesn't build a half and whole creature. Each is useful in its own way. The humanoid critters portion is esp useful in Gamma World.

2) Necrovore allows me a viable control on the number of undead that doesn't require tons of adventurers running around.

3) Non-Euclidean gives a excellent punch to Lovecraftian horrors. It is also has been useful in sci-fi horror games. The creature I see it best used with is the phase spider.

4) Since I dislike the great wheel and only use the inner planes, the Elemental template is a godsend.

5) Constructs are generally important to my worlds and the Ablative Construct is used for those beginning in creating them. You don't just suddenly learn how to build a golem- it should take years.

6) I found a replacement for the shade with the Shadowborne.

Atlas' PFB:

7) Child of the Dark/Child of the Light are an awesome look at a very alien organism. I have been comtemplating using them in Gamma World.

8) Possessed Construct replaces the lich in worlds without undead (or undead that are not created by mortal hands).

9) Skinwalker replaces werecreatures in primitive worlds.

Bastion's Complete Minions:

10) The Crowd is perfect for many horror games. I have also altered it into a hivemind creature that only consumes those about to die to preserve their knowledge.

Bastion's Alchemy & Herbalists

11) The Kin'o'the Green is a nice alternative to classes like the verdant lord. It also ties into the Plantform template from the BOT (DE).

MM III

12) Living Spell is simply an awesome idea. I haven't used them yet, but I will somehow.

Gotta agree that the Living Spell template, from ECS/MMIII is seriously awesome.

I've also got a lot of love for the Vampire Lord template, as it just screams "BBEG!"

Also, the Disembodied Spirit template also just seems really cool, since you can finally have dead people's souls still hanging around without having to have them be undead.

The Fleshbound Vampire from Silverthorne's BOT (DE) is sweet also, since you can add Buffy-style vampires to a modern game.

A lot.

There are several psionic templates I use, the half-fiend and half-celestial are pretty cool, the elemental templates from MotP are pretty cool (but not the half-elemental templates), Sean K Reynold's flesh-bound vampire template, and several non-FX templates from D20 Modern and Future. (The extraterrestrial is really cool.) The monster of legend is probably a bit overpowered for it's CR adjustment, but it's still pretty cool. The gigantic animal template is decent, but be sure to choose a bat (flies, can see the invsibile, etc).

The half-dragon template really sucks, but the draconic template from Draconomicon is pretty cool.

MY favorite is the Divinely infused from Monte's Requim to a God. It has interesting abilities and has some very cool background information. One of the most creatively inspired templates I've ever read.

I pretty much like all templates. For me, they're all just full of so many great ideas. I especially like Half-Illithid, Half-Fey, the Elemental templates, and the fleshbound vampire. Templates are just plain fun. :)

Hag Templates, Unhallowed, and yes, Fatlings. Probably the best from the CC Revised. (Especially since CC 1 didn't have any. :p)

Dragonlance's Death Knight a much needed upgrade for the old Death Knight, though MM 2 wasn't TOO bad. Just not bad ass enough.

Spellstiched very cool.

I've decided though if I want the baddest ass undead around, Unhallowed Spellstiched Death Knight is the ONLY way to go.

My own Sangrolu and Elder Vampire templates

Lich, vampire

Hag from CC revised

Bloodless from CC2

Chaos Spawn from Portals & Planes

Corrupted (BoVD)
Death Knight (MMII)
Evolved Undead (Libris Mortis)
Fallen Celestial (Book of Fiends)
Living Spell (ECS/MMIII)
Necromental (Libris Mortis)
Skeleton Warrior (Tome of Horrors)
Spellstitched (MMII)
Swarm Shifter (Libris Mortis)
Wendigo (FF)

Bloodstained, Entomanothrope, Skitterhaunt, Corpsewraith are all neat--and free from WotC.

The Creature Catalog has a lot of neat looking templates also.
