My favourite novel series is Moorcock's Eternal Champion, specifically the Elric, Corum, Hawkmoon & Erekose novels. D&D owes a lot to Elric in particular (Alignment conflict particularly Law vs Chaos, Elementals, the Multiverse).

re

Lord of the Rings

Any of the pre-modern books covering the Arthurian legends such as T.H. White's The Once and Future King[/g]. The Shining Knight is my all time favorite character. Even in LotR, Prince Imrahil stands out to me as a very cool character.

Louise Cooper's "Time Master" trilogy
Sharon Green's "Blendings" series (not the sequel trilogy though)

And, I have to mention Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar books. I know it's not "a series" per say, but they were so good I managed to read almost all of them, one after the other, I enjoy 99% of all I read.

I eliminated LotR from my choices because it's really one book, not a series.

I eliminated A Song of Ice and Fire because it isn't finished yet.

So I pick The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb. These books are like the perfect combination of literate, character-driven fantasy and "hey, that's pretty cool!"

Robert E. Howard's Conan stories. Over the years, several authors have written stories about Conan (writing a Conan story or two almost seems to be a prerequisite if you want to be a fantasy author), but none of them have managed to match the quality of Howard's work.

I checked out Howard's Conan stories two years ago from the library at the college I went to. Little did I suspect that they would become my favorite fantasy stories of all time. I've since purchased my own copies of Howard's Conan tales, and I reread them on a yearly basis. My favorite stories of his are The People of the Black Circle, A Witch Shall be Born, and The Hour of the Dragon.

Well... damn... one series only?

I guess it'd probably be Roger Zelazny's Amber. First series ONLY.

Snapping at its heels, however, are Glen Cook's Black Company series, and Steven Erikson's Malazan Books of the Fallen.

Throw my vote in for A Song of Ice and Fire. Besides Dune(which i've read a few dozen times), I think those are the only books i've reread more than thrice.

I'll always have a soft spot for the original Shannara trilogy by Terry Brooks. Especially the first two books (The Sword of Shannara and The Elfstones of Shannara).

Wow, reading the names of the favourite series mentioned in this thread has been a most excellent walk down memory lane, it would appear that I'm fortunate enough to have read virtually every book mentioned herein (yay being a fantasy nerd in high school.. all right still a fantasy nerd :) ), though I am still trying to track down the fist book of Black Company. Grrr.

I'd have to say that, although it's not my favourite series, the very first fantasy series I discovered & devoured was called the Three Kingdoms (story kinda similar to Krull). Has anyone else read it?

Also, I was wondering if anyone could help me remember the name of another series. Female heroine given powers, from a small village... very dark setting, huge conflict going on between good & evil, where both sides had numerically numbered heroes, one chapter details how in a battle the 4th, 7th & 8th evil champions were annihilated along with their troops when the 3rd of good destroyed himself (and his troops...) because they were losing the battle.) First book was released about 10 years ago. Can't remember any more details than that except for about two years I kept looking for the next book & failed to find it :(.

PS- Fionavar Tapestry, best series ever :)
