Your favourite TV show and why?

Interesting that a few people have mentioned Colbert Report in comparison to the Daily Show. I think I've only ever seen the Daily Show a couple of times and if it's the show I'm recalling, then the two seem to be entirely different shows. Certainly ones that I wouldn't put in the same category.
Well, they're both "fake news" shows that center around parodical use of existing news footage and thoughtful but entertaining banter and have celebrity guest interviews at the end. Both have more news content than most actual "news programs" and incorporate opinion without being dogmatic or deceptive. Not infrequently, they will touch on the same issues of the day with a similar slant. There are certainly differences between the two shows, but I think it's fair to compare them.

Both have accomplished enough and have won enough awards to pop up in a "best on tv" thread.

I must admit I've never got the appeal of that show. It's like Hustle (but less clever) combined with the A-Team (but less charismatic). I know it has its fans, though. It's not bad (don't get me wrong) but it's - in my opinion - a long, long way from being great. It's mediocre. But then, the entire world thinks Steven King and JK Rowling are good authors, so who am I to tell?

Stephen King is an excellent storyteller and a competent writer. Though he seems to repeating patterns rather than conjuring up new takes on old ideas, which he used to be very good at.

Can't speak on Rowling. But she's making billions.

No one can really compete with classic authors when it comes to writing, though I do think we still have quite a few good storytellers. But I still haven't read many modern books that can make language sing as older writers used to do.

There's also the fact that Colbert started as a correspondent on the Daily show.

Doctor Who.

It's managed to be the one show that almost never disappoints me with each new episode, and it manages to be both funny and dramatic when each is called for. Some moments give me shivers.

My favorite show ever thus far? It's no doubt Twin Peaks.

There are several others that are in contention as my all-time #2, though I'd have to sit down and really think about which one it would be (a strong contender off the top of my head is Nowhere Man).

As for my favorite currently-running show? Hmm... again, I'll have to think about it (a few years ago it was The Unit).

Maybe it's not the show I'm thinking of then. I thought the Daily Show was more like a Late Show rip-off.

Hmmm. Perhaps you're confusing the Daily Show with Last Call with Carson Daly.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart is a "news" show, The Colbert Report is an "editorial" spin-off. Both are hilarious and awesome.

I don't think I ever enjoyed a TV show over it's entire length, well, Star Trek - Next Generation, maybe.

The most recent really good one was Battlestar Galactica - at least season 1 & 2

Several others may have started somewhat promising but fizzled out even before season 1 was over.

The X-Files.

Groundbreaking show where everything came together from the chemistry of the cast to the writing the directing and the special effects. They were one of the first shows to make a TV show as high quality as a film.

I often heard criticism about The X-Files films that they were like a really long episode. That criticism was more a testament to the quality of the TV show. It was like watching a film every week. One of the best shows to this day I've ever watched on television.

I just recently started watching the X-Files seasons on dvd.

I recently found all 9 seasons in the bargain bin, and picked them all up for $16 per season. (ie. Basically they were an "impulse buy").

I didn't really follow the original series back in the 1990's. Only really saw some random episodes while channel surfing back then.

So far season 1 is interesting.
