Your group's tributes to Gary

My friends and I will be playing an AD&D 1e tribute game where they will explore some of the dungeons of Castle Greyhawk. I will be sketching out three floors of the dungeon on graph paper and everything.

It will be glorious.

We had a game scheduled for Tuesday night-- a new campaign with me taking the reigns as DM once again.

Tuesday's sad news influenced the game in a few ways:

1) One player named his warforged duskblade GYGAX, which even in ordinary circumstances I think is a fine and fitting name for a warforged.

2) I started each player with just a club, a dagger, leather armor, and a large sack.

3) Their first ignoble task was to clean out a kobold infestation in the sewers of Stormreach.

4) My kobolds were throwin' 20s like nobody's business.

Im running a one-shot Saturday using the 1e AD&D rules. Probably take the PCs thru Against the Giants or Tomb of Horrors :]

I dug out the pink box last night, so we'll be running Keep on the Borderlands this weekend using the basic rules; I was reading through it last night and I love it now as much as I loved it then.

All of my players started in heavily houseruled 3.5, but I anticipate that the game will still be a hit. I find myself looking forward to the simplicity of the first set of rules I played under.

Thank you Gary for your genius; you will be missed.

We didn't play this week, but we gathered last night. We toasted Gary and observed 1d6 moments of silence in his honor.

When I played in his game a few years back, Gary taught me one important lesson about DMing: It goes better with gin.

So at the start of our regularly scheduled game on Friday, I will be toasting his memory with a glass of gin. Then I will try to kill the party with a huge black dragon.

Then later, a classic dungeon crawl inspired by Tomb of Horrors and filled with Gygax's monsters.

Some years ago, in a discussion of pun-inspired beasties, I mentioned migraine haddock, algae-covered hair triggerfish, hybrid quipper-snapper, fiendish fish (Styx), limpet minds, and ectoplankton. Gary's reply was:

Sunday's game will feature an assortment of EGG-approved critters.

Does anyone know what Gary preferred to drink? I want to toast for him on Saturday before our Session but I want to do it with something he personally liked.

Gin. He and his (underage) son took a break to drink it during the game I played with him.
