Your least favourite setting

Of the settings I'm reasonably aware of, my least favorite is Dark Sun. Runners-up include Ravenloft, Eberron, and Midnight.

(My favorite setting is the Forgotten Realms, shortly followed by Al-Qadim, Planescape, and Spelljammer.)

Your hatred of power gaming is not Dawnforge's fault.

It's ike complaining that Traveller sucks because you don't like games set in outer space.
I don't think you read this thread very well. It's about "your least favorite setting", not "what's objectively bad". Heck, virtually every FR complaint on this thread had to do with DM problems, not setting problems.

Dragonlance.
I _HATE_ kender. I _HATE_ Gully dwarfs.
And more than anything else, I _HATE_HATE_HATE_HATE_HATE_ Tinker Gnomes.

Sovereign Stone. We played it for one session. The whole premise is that every single race hates each other. Passsionately. It's very, very hard to play in a world where everyone hates you. Also hard to have a diverse party because nobody trusts each other.

A friend of mine is moving and was giving away stuff he didn't want. That book was one of the things. His copy was a 3rd printing. I honestly don't know how it made it to a 3rd printing! The magic system has some potential, and I'm currently working on ripping it out and refurbishing it, but the setting is horrid. Not to mention the art. Something with Larry Elmore's name on it should have better art than that! Ick.

Considering only the settings published by TSR and Wizards of the Coast, I would pick Forgotten Realms as the one I actually dislike, for the usual reasons. I consider SpellJammer to be a silly concept and, as such, I never got the trouble of reading it and I don't attach any strong feeling for or against it. I disliked Planescape's jargon, but I enjoyed the setting. I liked most of the others, some more, others less.

Outside TSR/WotC, I dislike the World of Darkness, the new SpaceMaster setting, and the setting revision in Traveller: The New Era.

I don't have one setting that sticks out as the WURST.EVAR. but I can make a list of ones that I don't like. Many of them have been mentioned already:

FR - Drizz't, Elminster, fan boyz, 2E PC'ness, way too much overpowered magic for me.

Eberron - too much magic/tech and modern sensibilities for the psuedo-medieval feel, robo... err, I mean warforged, etc.

Dark Sun - no. just no. Copy and paste the entire setting here.

Spelljammer - I was never sure what they were thinking when they released this one. Injected too much silliness into the game.

Kalamar - Just feels bland (and I like Greyhawk).

Dragonlance - Kender, Gully Dwarves, etc. Does anything that PC's do really matter? If you leave canon behind...

Those are all I can think of right now.

I can't help but feel that this thread is a bad idea.

But like a moth to the flame, I am drawn in...

  • Dragonlance. A few reasons:
    1) Kender. 'nuff said.
    2) The railroading that was the original modules left a bad taste in my mouth till this day.
    3) Some fans of the setting seem ignorant of things that existed well before Dragonlance... like Death Knights and Orbs of Dragonkind. It was maddening to all the sudden have long integrated aspects of my game be compared to dragonlance at every turn.
  • Spelljammer. Seemed like a cool idea, but:
    1) It seemed like the setting lacked any real, central conlfict to base games on until its waning days.
    2) It redefined the core cosmology in a bad way. Crystal spheres and phlogistoin my heiny.
