Your least favourite setting

It's funny. I wrote before that Dragonlance was my least favorite, but I also was frustrated with the Scarred Lands (sorry, Nightfall...I saw your post and remember them). Not because of a conceptual issue or a dislike of the setting — I wanted to like it. But I got to the party late, and the cost to buy in was way too much. The material was so spread out over so many books. I think someone else here mentioned that if it had been done like the FRCS, it would have been brilliant. I agree.

Kajamba,

Hey it's no skin off my nose my friend. I'd be the first to agree, if we had an SLCS akin to either Eberron (not saying FLAVOR wise but you know outlining things clearly) or FR, I'd think people would be way happier with the Scarred Lands overall.

My hope is this: some day down the road, there will be a revised SLCS that is complete and mostly unto itself. This way, if it costs a pretty penny, people might want it more because it's complete.

Of course tossing down a few path adventures, maybe class specific single shot adventures, wouldn't be a bad thing either.

Nightfall: Cool. I just wanted to make sure that you didn't feel attacked, because I knew my post would follow yours. As for a revised and complete SLCS, yeah, I'd definitely be interested in that.

Personally, I disliked Spelljammer.

Planescape felt more "right" with respect to a world-spanning campaign. Spelljammer just felt silly. Others may disagree.

I've also never really been a fan of Greyhawk. The only modules I've played or seen were Castle Greyhawk, Temple of the Frog, and Isle of the Ape, and I found that Castle Greyhawk, with the Spock....er Elf, and Star Trek references among other things was way too flippant for my tastes. Aside from that, the setting just felt kind of blah, and I could never get into it.

Nightfall, I suspect you may be right. Scarred Lands had potential, but it became bloated too quickly. As someone who was interested in learning about it, I found it frustrating that I needed the DM screen to generate characters, another book to find out about the religions, another book to find out about secret orders etc. and another book to know about the world. On some level, even if it's somewhat generic, all that info should be in one book. Then, if I want more detail, I can buy a book with more detail about a specific topic. But the main campaign book should give me what I need to get started. Maybe it was the way the setting came out and was conceptualized, I don't know. i believe the first book was Relics and Rituals, which was way cool. And it referred to things in a setting that didn't exist yet. But the book came from submissions by many different people. I'm curious if its success then led to the setting, and things were just made up as they went along.

The aasathi were very cool though :) I'm trying to figure out a way to put them into my non-SL campaign.

Banshee,

From what little I recall, the Wieck brothers had an idea for the setting...but I think it kind of eluded them after everyone started adding things on. It was hard to keep up, especially when there were like a dozen or so ideas/submissions that deserved to have a role in the setting.

(And yes, Assatthi are the coolest. :) )

In terms of how I'd view a complete SL book, it would have to be on par with GR's Black Company and/or Book of the Righteous in terms of page length. This way you cover the basics and leave enough room for the rest.

Kajamba,

Just have to wait/hope and see.

so what was the thing with Spelljammer? was it space? Spaceships? Lots of people mentioned that they didn't like it but havn't said why.

It was D&D in space, but it just felt silly. It did follow what I understand to be imaginings put forward by Michaelangelo or something...but that meant that planets hung in space, and each solar system was surrounded by this giant globe made of crystal. Outside of those globes were limitless stretches of "space" that were actually called phlogiston....kind of like a glowing mist or something. It just seemed too wonky.

The ships were cool, but some races like the Giff (bipedal, talking hippopotamus men) I really didn't fancy.

I just couldn't get into it. In a way, I've always thought the concept could work, but when I looked at the full picture, I just didn't like it.

If it was done right, I'd definitely check it out. As it stands, one of my players in my Planescape game has a dwarven rune mage (from the Burok Torn book) and I've got an NPC drendali tatoo adept running a tatoo parlor in Sigil. So I've been trying to integrates bits of the setting, because they're very cool.

Just way too much material to try and coral to run an actual game.

Al-Qadim must have a pretty loyal following, as being that it has not yet been metioned. ;)

Al-Qadim was too well-done to complain about. Only DMed a short campaign there, but it stopped mainly because I changed cities, and didn't play again for several years.

I'm very surprised nobody's made an attempt to pick it up, or make something similar under the D20 license.
