You're a gamer???

One day last week I was at work and a co-worker and I were talking about role-playing games. Who would walk past us but our CEO who obviously heard a portion of our conversation. He stopped and said to us. "Are you guys talking about D&D?" We paused, not knowing what to say. I said yes, and that we run separate games. He asked what edition we played and whether or not we tried Castles and Crusades. He was up to speed on OSRIC and was actually thinking about getting back into gaming. He was the very last person I would suspect of being a gamer. He's always Mr. Business basically.

My question is, have you ever discovered someone to be a gamer who does not seem to fit the normal mold? Someone who you just assume wouldn't think of playing such a thing as a role playing game let alone even hear of such a thing?

Typical C&C fan, suggesting to any D&D player they meet that they should try it... :)

Seriously, though. Very recently we discovered my wife is a gamer. She had never played before, and used to claim she never understood the attraction. In the past few years she discovered her love for fantasy through the LotR movies, and is obsessed with Harry Potter, and when she discovered a month ago that two of her cousins in town played D&D, she volunteered us for the game.

We've only played 3 sessions, but she's hooked. I joke (to paraphrase American Pie) that she is a gamer, she just never joined a game.

I found out my girlfriend is a gamer.. we had taken a break after high school where she was the popular blond type, during the break she had played D&D, magic, vampire masqueraded (LARP style) and WoW. Never thought I would see the day. Now she want to play with me, but because I am the DM I do not think it be fair for my players to have my girlfriend playing.

Why in the world not? She's just another player; treat her like one, with no favoritism, and you'll be fine.

I've never run into anyone who was an unexpected gamer. But I was almost on the other side; I was on an Amtrak train and walked past a booth in the club car. Two kids were in it, both about 12, and one was running a homemade module for the other. I was *this* close to asking if I could join the game. :)

What he says! When I'm running games my other half is one of the players and vice versa. No problem!

I have never been the one to discover a gamer but it seems I am the type that people expect not to be a gamer. because people always seem shocked that I game.

I was looking at a gaming book at a bookstore once and had a young kid say to me "are you getting that for your kid" and seem shocked when I said no it's for me, then he was like that is so cool I wish my parents played.

Dude, you're missing a golden opportunity: do a 1 PC game with her! You can shower attention on her, make her feel magical and special, and have a creative life TOGETHER.

A bit off the topic, but I'll advise against this. At least to start.

A former roommate of mine did this. When he then tried to integrate her in with other players, she had a horribly skewed view of party dynamics and game balance. She was used to always getting her way, in dramatic fashion, and it took her years to internalize how more team-oriented and cooperative gaming works.

Me and a friend were chatting about Baldur's gate in a maths class, one summer, and our teacher over hears us. I go out of the room for the loo or to get something (I don't remember). Not only does he play Baldur's gate I&II he is also an experienced DM at D&D and introduced us to V:TM. That was awesome! I'm pretty sure some friends I've made reccently have heard of it and might be interested! :D
