You're a gamer???

This is about 8 years ago or so. My roommate and I threw a New Years Eve party, unbeknownst to me, he invited the HOTTEST girl from work. I hadn't met her before, but she was tremendously friendly.

"Blah blah blah, this and that and the other.. yadda yadda yadda..." She pauses, while looking over my shoulder at the bookshelf. "Do you play D&D?" My D&D stuff was in the other room, but my bookshelf was pretty Sci-fi and fantasy heavy.

"ummm, yeah?"

"We're new to Portland, my husband and I are looking for a game here in town... Do you have room at your table?"

The long and the short of it is that She turned out to be the best DM I ever played with. I played in that group up until last year. Just lucky I guess. Random conversation accidently brought up that she needed a game.

I occasionally spy one of my coworkers at the library reading Quake forums. She's a very conservatively dressed 30-something librarian, and so it strikes me as a little incongruous.

Talk about a little incongruous.

I wore my "Rollin' on 20s" t-shirt the other day to a work related function and a couple of my bosses started talking to me about it. Turns out they run a weekly game with a couple of the other supervisors. Weird how these things just kinda come up.

I remember in high school (grade 9 or so) I was scanning through some clip art for a paper in my typing class when I came across a monster from the monster manual I. Now, at this point, I was pretty embarrassed about saying "hey, I play D&D" (I was like that, as a kid), so I just said something along the lines of "I'm pretty sure this picture was lifted from a book I have at home."

My typing teacher comes by, and takes a look at it. "Hey, yeah, it is. I have the same book."

Exchange glances. Makes sense that he'd be a D&D nerd.
(he was, I verified it a year or so later)

Not really about meeting someone who was a gamer, just a strange context sort of thing, but:

I'm at college one day, and there's a beer garden thing going on - sort of a "welcome to the school" sort of thing. I was running between classes (of course it had to happen in between modern history and anthropology), and decided to cut through the beer garden because, let's face it, that was about as close to partying as I'd get that night.

Along the way, I bump into some guy or another, and he makes this weird gesture at me. Almost like he's making a cross. He's really, really drunk, and has a football player body (I think he was wearing a hockey jersey, too...). He makes this gesture, and I'm a little weirded out, and I keep on walking.

I take a few steps, and his buddy yells out "Hey, your turn undead attempt worked! Nice one!"

Then, they both started chanting "Turn undead! Turn undead!"

I don't know whether it's funny, or insulting. I guess I *am* a little pale. :)

I used to live in another city for five years, and developed a really good rapport with one of the older clerks at the convenience store near my house. The day I moved out of the city, my very last day there ever, I find out he's been looking for a D&D group, just as I had been.

Life is cruel like that sometimes.

Typical C&C fan, suggesting to any D&D player they meet that they should try it... :) ...

And what's wrong with that? :D

Doesn't hurt to try it after all. For some people it's great ... for others, meh. :\

My experience is rather similar to Elf Witch's ... most people do not expect me to be a gamer. :) Have not stumbled across "unexpected gamers" myself in a long time. Maybe b/c I am usually fairly good at making my "detect gamer" spot check. ;)

My question is, have you ever discovered someone to be a gamer who does not seem to fit the normal mold? Someone who you just assume wouldn't think of playing such a thing as a role playing game let alone even hear of such a thing?

Sure.

My current Team Lead at the mortgage office is an old 2e player. I was surprised when I first found that out, though I took the oportunity to sell him on 3.5 -- and I think I just about have it done :)

I've also known a few long haul truckers and honest to god outlaw bikers who played a lot of D&D whenever they got some free time. They definitely didn't fit the stereotype -- they wouldn't drink when playing D&D because it disrupted their focus on the game :D

I was at a buddy's wedding this summer. The bride moved here from Quebec a few years ago and 2 of her bride's maids had flown out from Montreal for the wedding. One was tall, blonde, smoking hot, late-20's. One of my friends in the bridal party tells me, "Yeah, can you believe she's a DM for her D&D group back in Montreal? We were discussing the finer points of attacks of opportunity during the rehearsal last night."

"Yeah, and unfortunately, there's her boyfriend."

Most of the guys (and the occasional girls) I have gamed with don't fit the stereotypical "gamer" mould.

Of all the people I've played, I'd say only about 20% would get fingered in a "D&D lineup"... :p
