You're a gamer???

I was talking about D&D in my Journalism class back in 12th grade, and when a bunch of beautiful, albeit preppy-type, girls turned and ask, "Wow, you play D&D? Can we join?"

Admittedly this is the first one that surprised me so far. That wouldn't have happened in MY high school, let me tell you. Gamers were as rare as hen's teeth and (just like said fowl's fangs) you could literally count how many there were on both hands.... :\

My question is, have you ever discovered someone to be a gamer who does not seem to fit the normal mold? Someone who you just assume wouldn't think of playing such a thing as a role playing game let alone even hear of such a thing?

I personally fit the bill from my appearance alone, but I have a few friends who do not match the D&D mold at all, but love the game.

Two of them were raised in NY's "gangsta" culture---the talk, walk, types of friends, baggy jeans, name-brand shirts, type of music they listen to (gangsta rap mostly, though these two do enjoy alternative and heavy metal surprisingly), and the attitude. One is Italian (mixed with a little Polish I believe) but he looks very similar to a Puerto Rican and the other African-American.

You would never guess they'd be into stuff like MtG and D&D. Especially my Italian buddy, who gets embarrased when I mention it to his girlfriends whenever he's trying to "kick game." Heh heh. He get so mad. It's really funny when these girls ask him how does he play the game and I go into detail.

I simply assume that everyone I meet is a roleplayer... ;)

...or that they'd become one if ever they had the opportunity to play in a good game. How many people have dismissed the hobby entirely because of a single bad experience?

That happened to an ex-friend (long story, in a nut shell, he cheated on my gaming session by reading over the Dungeon Magazine that had the first adventure for Shackled City and tried hiding it from me...bastard) of mine's girlfriend.

She apparently had a really bad gaming experience because her first DM happened to be her ex (or was it her friend's ex? Not sure on the details) and he was a real mean, drunk DM that just made the game very stressful. Ever since then she won't have anything to do with D&D...even though it's not the game's fault, it's the old DM's and I believe she should game with a better group again in order to get over it and move on.

I met this woman who was running fetish events in the city I had moved into for University. She ran an S&M club and was definitely an awesome, smart and... well... kinky woman at least a year my senior. She was also one of the queens of the local goth scene. And smokin' hawt.

We met a few times in a few environments over the next year - one night at a club where she was dressed up like Pris from BladeRunner (I went up to her and asked if she could turn a cartwheel - she answered that she could also crush my head between her thighs). In the end we got to know each other better and since she was a goth, I figured I could suck her into gaming through Vampire the Masquerade.

Then she showed me her AD&D1e books and explained that she had quit playing D&D when the munchkin manual had been released (aka: Unearthed Arcana).

Kick ass.

We've been married for 11 years now.

THIS is a great story. :D

Not sure if a Police Sergeant fits the bill of what one would expect of a gamer. I've actually bumped into a few other officers that game, but with a city this size the nearest game would have been 90 minutes from me and outside the city.

It certainly isn't something one generally wears on their sleeve ;)

I tend to leave Enworld open on my work pc daily... have yet to have anyone comment or ask... I'll probably have to find a flashier gaming site :)
