I met this woman who was running fetish events in the city I had moved into for University. She ran an S&M club and was definitely an awesome, smart and... well... kinky woman at least a year my senior. She was also one of the queens of the local goth scene. And smokin' hawt.

We met a few times in a few environments over the next year - one night at a club where she was dressed up like Pris from BladeRunner (I went up to her and asked if she could turn a cartwheel - she answered that she could also crush my head between her thighs). In the end we got to know each other better and since she was a goth, I figured I could suck her into gaming through Vampire the Masquerade.

Then she showed me her AD&D1e books and explained that she had quit playing D&D when the munchkin manual had been released (aka: Unearthed Arcana).

Kick ass.

We've been married for 11 years now.

All good stories start with bladerunner.

Dude, you're missing a golden opportunity: do a 1 PC game with her! You can shower attention on her, make her feel magical and special, and have a creative life TOGETHER.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm... ;)

(Yes, this works.)

I get the "You're a gamer?!" thing a lot too.

My high school english teacher was a vampire LARPer. Shocked the heck out of me.

People are surprised when they find out that I game, as well. I wouldn't say that anyone in my gaming group falls under the stereotype of "typical gamer."

Well,

I usually get outed as a gamer. I tend to be very open about it.
However I am also the Head Deacon at my Lutheran Bretheren Church, Youth Director, Sunday School teacher.

I Larp as well.... :)

My question is, have you ever discovered someone to be a gamer who does not seem to fit the normal mold? Someone who you just assume wouldn't think of playing such a thing as a role playing game let alone even hear of such a thing?

No. I have GameDAR. I'm not kidding.

However, people are often surprised to find that I am a D&D player.

I run into this sort of thing frequently, people I'd expect not to be gamers actually are. And I'm not talking about WoW and online gaming, just table-top gaming. Though I think online gaming, the resurgence of fantasy movies and books have helped make gaming more mainstream than ever.

I also think that the reason I encounter more people who play games is because I'm not afraid to mention that I game. Gaming is a part of who I am (Then again, I also don't ramble on about my favorite character, either).

I definitely get shocked looks when I say I'm a gamer. *shrug*

I guess I look more like an ex quarterback, or club bouncer, than a DM . . . who knew?
