You're a Very Old Blue Dragon: What spells are YOU going to have up in a scrap?

Well, there's my question.

One day, my party will face their draconic nemesis, Valmuuresh.

If and when that happens, let's assume old Val has some spells up. What would they be, assuming base dragon stats?

I'd go with haste, cat's grace, protection from good, mage armor, and either improved invisibility or mirror image - depending on how sadistic you want to be.

Something to heal myself with! (Can't remember whether blue's get access to any cleric spells, but if they do, then some healing for sure!)

A Very Old Blue knows spells as a Sor11, so that's 9/5/5/4/3/2 (and has access to Clr spells and those from Air, Evil and Law domains). Omitting the cantrips, I'd go for:

1st - Mage Armor, Divine Favor, Shield of Faith, Protection from Good, Change Self
2nd - Cat's Grace, Mirror Image, Major Image, Protection from Elements, Endurance
3rd - Haste, Vampiric Touch, Displacement, Blink
4th - Improved Invisibility, Polymorph Self, Stoneskin
5th - Teleport, Wall of Force

Is that mean enough?

Hm, plenty mean. Excellent! This seems to be the Evasion/Escape master...

Teleport at 4th level? Isn't that a 5th level spell?

Fourth level has some good clerical spells. Death Ward and Spell Immunity are pretty good. (Though a dragon has good fort saves)

Stoneskin might be good too.

Here's my Evil Dragon Spell List:

1st: Mage Armor, Shield, Protection from Good, Obscuring Mist (for use with Blindsight), Magic Missile

2nd: Desecrate (Evil Domain), Wind Wall (Air Domain), Detect Thoughts, Darkness, Endurance

3rd: Haste, Displacement, Fireball, Suggestion

4th: Stoneskin, Improved Invisibility, Lesser Geas

5th: Teleport, Wall of Force

Now for the reasoning: Detect Thoughts, Suggestion and Lesser Geas are all in there to make your Evil Dragon a more fearsome foe both politically and on the off chance that the players decide to chat with her.

Fireball is in there becuase -- well, who expects a Blue Dragon to cast Fireball? Likewise, I thought of switching out Wall of Force for Cone of Cold... very unexpected. However, Wall of Force is just awesome for its level. Alternately, for a more political Dragon, Mind Fog would help it keep its victims from making thier pesky Will saves vs. Lesser Geas and Suggestion.

Back to Fireball, though. Your Dragon can cast like a Sorcerer, so Metamagical Feats only cost her a full-round action. From the cover of Improved Invisibility, cast a Maximized Fireball at the party. Likewise for Magic Missile.

I tried to give her one "misdirection" spell per level, counting on her blindsight to get her through Darkness and Mist.

Hope this is useful, -- Nifft
