You're a Very Old Blue Dragon: What spells are YOU going to have up in a scrap?

Teleport at 4th level? Isn't that a 5th level spell?

Fourth level has some good clerical spells. Death Ward and Spell Immunity are pretty good. (Though a dragon has good fort saves)

Stoneskin might be good too.

Whoops! Must be getting old :) I'll edit my list.

Hm, plenty mean. Excellent! This seems to be the Evasion/Escape master...

That's what I had in mind. A Blue Dragon who fights and runs (teleports) away...:D If the party doesn't know beforehand what type of dragon they're attacking, make sure to use Change Self to look like a gold dragon.

Check out the following link for some nifty spell list ideas:

I should point out that that list of spells on the Bothered About Disposable Dragons site is the result of a looong thread here on ENWorld about what the best dragon spells are. You may be able to dig up the thread itself, but that list is a fairly accurate condensation. AFAIK, this is also the basis for Charles Greathouse' Dragon Generator

Alter Self, Make the dragon look like a Red Dragon instead of Blue

and

Protection from Cold

He looks like a red dragon so the party won't use fire spells, instead they will use cold, but he is protected from that. He is actually a blue dragon so when the party tries lightning that won't work either. :)

Vyk, are you allowing spells from other sources besides Core or not?

I might in my game, so yes, alow yourself to release that pent-up pressure from not posting about the Scarred Lands in the post above: go ahead and throw in any spells from whatever sources (R&R, I assume?) and I'll see if it would fit my game.

I hope I'm not assuming too much, Mr. SL Evangelist ;)

Oooo, allowing non-core spells! :) I'll use the Books of Eldrich Might (I, II & III) and Magic of Faerun

These are not complete spell lists, just suggestions for each knowable spell level.

MaoF: Know Defenses, Forcewave
BoEM I: Precise Vision
BoeM II: Anavar's Anticipated Attack
BoEM III: Noness Toma (Slip Between Sight)

2nd:
MaoF: Eagle's Splendor, Battering Ram
BoEM III: Garris Adon (Seeming of Form), Pierce, Play the Fool

3rd:
MaoF: Mestil's Acid Breath, Khelben's Suspended Silence (all over the lair)
BoEM I: Foil Tracer
BoEM III: Abuashne (Share Armor), Induce Vulnerability

4th:
MaoF: Thunderlance, Ghorus Toth's Metal Melt
BoEM I: Coldscream, Flaming Corrosion, Greater Mark of Water, Spelltrap, Zone of Speed
BoEM III: Ilrosos Tobor (Roses of Life)

Well I was going to suggest one or two from Magic of Faerun along with R&R. :) That or perhaps a few from Book of Eldritch Might. The mark spells from there work well for casting on various minions. But here is my suggested list.

(I'll list the sources for you.)

0th level:
Quick Boost (BoEM 2), Minor Ward (BoEM), Bleeding Disease (Cleric) (R&R1), Shockwave (R&R), Detect Magic, Read Magic, No Light (Cleric) (BoVD), Resistance, Animate Vermin (Cleric) (Hollowfaust)

1st: Sorrow (BoVD), Disdain the Divine (BoEM 2), Smite (R&R 1), Know Protections (Magic of Faerun), Bestow Wound (BoVD)

2nd: Sadism (BoVD), Cure Moderate Wounds, Rend the Soverign Soul (Cleric) (R&R), Death Armor (Magic of Faerun), Eagle's Splendor (Magic of Faerun/T&B)

3rd: Nybor's Mild Admonishment (Magic of Faerun), Chardun's Torments (R&R), Hold Person, Bloodstorm (R&R)

4th: Warding Globes (BoEM2), Greater Enhancement Flow (BoEM),
Accelerate Reflexes (R&R2), Cure Cricital Wounds

5th: Essential Blade (R&R2), Quintelemental Blast (BoEM 3)

There. Now you have a party that won't know WHAT to expect. :)

Btw, nice suggestions Nifft.

Great ideas, Nifft and Nightfall!

Now for my semi-rant:

Dragons do not need combat spells. Period. They've got enough of an attack selection as is. If a dragon is stuck throwing a measly 11d6 cone of cold as its action for the round, the battle's already over.

I'm fond of shilsen's list, although I'd probably take expeditious retreat or Kaupaer's skittish nerves instead of shield of faith. Unless Valmuuresh's feats are already accounted for, consider giving him Empower Spell. A lucky roll on an Empowered cat's grace gives the dragon a +3 AC bonus and +3 Reflex save bonus. An average roll on an Empowered endurance spell gives V 90 bonus hp(!) and a +3 Fort save bonus.

Oh, and consider giving V slow. PC parties tend to be haste-happy, which can ruin an opponent's day. Being able to counter and dispel all haste spells currently in effect on the party can be pretty nasty.
