Ok. Lets talk about this. Put aside all your 3e rules lawyering and think flavor.
A Drow matriarch of Menzoberanzan, either Matron Baenre or another family is on top of Menzonberanzan's chaotic hierarchy.
The Matron's first thought after the attack is not what the monsters did, but who was behind the attack.
Was it: a) One of her minions attempting an assassination to take over the house?
b) One of the rival matrons that want's to be the first family in Menzoberanzan?
c) Some external threat (with two armies outside, it could very well have been an external attack).
d) two or more of the above.
The Matron might conclude that it was d ... the external agents provided the force, some other matron in the city has a deal with the external armies to be the #1 house in a revamped Menzo, and that one of her minions betrayed her (otherwise her defenses would have held against the pathetic monsters).
After a proper amount of praying, torturning, and interogating, the Matron may surmise who the traitor is in her house and what rival house is plotting against her. (The matron's paranoia may or may not be based on reality, she is chaotic evil after all).
Then she would probably come up with some plot that would result in the horrible deaths of the monsters that attacked her, the minion that betrayer her, the rival house plotting against her, and the armies outside Mensoberanzan.
Manipulation and Treachery.
Now you can put your 3e hat back on (remembering that our Matron of Menzoberanzan is probably epic level).
