You have yet to encounter these spells, and so you do not need to roll at this time. When you encounter these spells, that is when the check is made, as per the example in the PHB, page 10. Your starting spell book, however, is exempt from this, and is the result of diligent study with your master.

Your spell book has Read Magic, and three other spells:
Charm Person
Affect Normal Fires
Detect Magic.

That's actually a good list. There's your book!
Okay. I guess if I don't have a choice, I don't have a choice. Changes noted. All I need to do is buy equipment now which I will take care of in the next few days.

Yeah, I find it fascinating just how much the game has evolved over the decades; even back in 1e we were learning to ignore to-hit adjustments by armor, and opening choices in starting spell books.

Well technically, I did follow the rules to the letter, I just assumed you would be letting us pick our spells from the offensive/defensive/miscellaneous list rather than rolling randomly, which is mentioned as a perfectly acceptable option in the DMG.

Hey guys, I'll be at a games convention over the weekend (Cangames in Ottawa) so I doubt I'll be posting.

I'm sure you'll all miss me ;)

I must admit I'm stumped. Lidia would help Sarge. But I am not sure exactly what a first level druid can do in the way of non-magical healing.

There is a way to save him, and as a druid, you might just know it. You are properly equipped for it, don't worry there.

This may be a particularly evil encounter spot, but I wouldn't make it impossible.
