What is your gaming white whale?

I'd like to play in TOR game and a Pendragon game with a group that "gets" those genres, because I'd like to learn how to "get" them myself.

I've also got a bunch of baby white whales (belugas?) that will likely never see the light of day for lack of time and player interest. These are mostly just high-concept campaigns of my own; or else fairly niche RPGs from indie creators or defunct publishers.

One of my playing/running white whales is a long-standing campaign of Doctor Who. I saw the idea over on RPG.net. Basically using Doctor Who as the universal adapter for playing in any and all other RPGs. One episode you're stuck in Alpha Complex, the next you're tracking down cultists in Arkham, the next you're delving a dungeon for lost treasure.

One of my design white whales is a universal key to D&D editions. The idea being to allow everyone at the table to play in the same game together while they're all playing different editions of D&D.

Oh, man. I have a stack of stuff.
  • Monster of the Week
  • Scum & Villainy
  • Night's Black Agents (playing it at GenCon Online this year)
  • Fiasco
  • Orbital Blues
  • Ars Magica
  • The OAR version of Dark Tower, under either 5E or OSR rulesets
  • Even a short superhero campaign with a bunch of friends I've known since the 1990s through comics, assuming we could find a superhero RPG system we could all agree on, which seems impossible
  • A very hobbity/cosy The One Ring game
Honestly, the biggest challenge for everyone is time, including on my end. At this rate, I'll need some large print versions of these games to run in retirement.

I've wanted to play Fantasy Craft fully updated with Scott Gearin's New Pie rules, reworking the attribute, skill and action dice systems, though at this point nearly all that work has made it into his Alabaster project, and if that ever gets off the ground I'd be all about it.

I am, unfortunately, the only person I know who would even consider running base FC, much less heavily modified FC, so the odds I'd get to play any such game instead of DMing it are vanishingly small.

White whales ahoy!
Great question and my answers in no particular order:
1 Dark Tower in the Wilderlands setting. I’ll probably DM this one.
2 To see @Steampunkette ’s awesome Sins of the Scorpion Age setting in print (and for Arkaeus of Myrkona to tread it’s jewelled thrones beneath his sandalled feet)
3 A Victorian steampunk game as a player.
4 Tsojcanth and Tharizdun re-visited for 5e

There’s much more I’d love but I don’t want to be greedy!

The Northlands Saga complete. An 11-adventure 1-20 D&D viking adventure path. I have not read it in-depth but it looks good and hits a lot of my interests.

Also pretty much any long adventure for Call of Cthulhu, converted to 5e D&D and my homebrew setting for a D&D pulp horror game. I used to run my Ravenloft games a lot like pulp CoC where you do investigations but are expected to fight some of the monsters.
Go for it regards the Northlands Saga.
I’ve been lucky enough to DM it for a great group of players and it was brutal fun. I can still taste the salt of the bitter old seas, and still see the look on @TheSword ’s face as the gold, tied up in a blanket, slipped of the tilting ice floe, into the unplumbed depths!

I’m already lucky to be running one of my life dreams… the Directors Cut Enemy Within campaign for @GuyBoy et al.

So I have five left…

I’d love to play in or DM a truly brilliant Underdark Campaign that brought to life all those dreams I had reading the Menzoberranzan boxed set as a 16 year old a quarter century ago. I’m yet to find the campaign that can fulfil that… I missed the boat on night below. Throne of Night ended a failed Kickstarter and Rise of the Drow doesn’t quite do it for me. Out of the Abyss comes probably the closest. Maybe I’ll one day combine all of them.

I’d love to play in or DM a truly amazing Birthright Game… or something conveying it. With all the atmosphere of Cerillia and the politiking and mass combat and castles and monsters etc etc. One day.

Finally I’d love to play in or DM an amazing Dark Sun game, but as of yet the publisher adventures just don’t cut it. I’ve toyed with adaptions many times but I think I need a bit more inspiration from WotC to get me over the line. Definitely a white whale here… more myth than anything else.

I’d love to run a great Planescape campaign. Something that captured the wackiness but folded in great lore… kinda how the latter God of War games did. This might well become a reality.

I’d love to run a mash up of Dragon Heist, Keys from the Golden Vault and Undermountain. This might become a reality at some point soon as I’m trialing a conversion to WFRP it is fitting amazingly well so far. Might be one for next year once I’ve finished Age of Worms.

The funny thing is that increasingly I’m looking at games and thinking while it’s hard to convert D&D into a WFRP tone game it’s very easy to convert D&D games to WFRP. The more I consider it the less reasons I have not too.

3.0's City of the Spider Queen might be an option, particularly since switching systems will remove the drow NPC CR issue that 3e had. It would be on theme for the Menzoberranzan aspects.
