Welcome to the Halmae (updated 2/27/07)

The Magnificent Seven, Halmae style. Excellent update. I particularly liked the point of view of the peasant, Mikaro.

Welcome to the Halmae (updated 2/27/07)

Oh, what an intractable tease. Well, at least we're in good company. But the Happiest of Birthdays to you, spyscribe. As they say, "May the most you wish for be the least you get." Thanks again for the terrific Story Hour.

Welcome to the Halmae (updated 2/27/07)

Great story, engaging and fun writing style, and regular updates. Hands down my favorite story hour.

    Rate Shaun of the Dead

OK, I'll bite. At the risk of hijacking the thread, what is this movie? As for Shaun of the Dead, I must say I enjoyed it muchly. I thought Simon Pegg made a hysterical straight man, and even had some fine dramatic moments near the end of the movie. Gave it an '8'.

    Steven Eriksons Malazan series

I was able to grab a copy of the first book on a recent trip to England, thinking it would be ideal for the 10-hour plane ride home. But, like others apparently, I didn't find myself really getting drawn in by the story or caring about any of the characters after the first 100 pages, so I gave...

Craig Kilborn Leaves the Late, Late Show

Meaning she isn't much fun to work with? Can't speak to that, but I like the selection. She's funny, in a pleasingly snarky way.

    Movies that take you back.

Weird. I, too, saw this with my brother, and was literally on the floor of the theater during the snowball fight scene. The first and only time I've ever laughed so hard I unseated myself. The entire movie was pure comic genius.

No more Firefly - what next?

I'll second the recommendation for "Sports Night". I loved the writing and the characters on the show, and it was certainly given short shrift by whatever network it was on (can't remember now). I'd also submit that the title likely put off a number of viewers who might've mistaken it for an...

    Breaking the Author/Reader Contract.

Well, I suppose I'd have to say that everybody has a different threshold for "something horrible". Depending on the horrible thing (killing an unarmed opponent, kicking puppies, not paying taxes, etc.), I may be able to work my way past it and enjoy the story. Rape, however, is a deal-killer...

    Breaking the Author/Reader Contract.

I would agree with this. My expectations were not set by anything the author did early in the book, but rather reviews and opinions of other readers. So, while Donaldson broke no unwritten contract (real or perceived), he took what I thought was a rather big risk with the audience and, in my...

    Breaking the Author/Reader Contract.

Well, I'd only modify the question slightly with "otherwise would have liked". But the language you used in setting up your question is nearly the exact language I've used to describe why I couldn't make it through the first book of Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant books, despite the...

    Catwoman and Bourne Supremacy

I think the "good" actions you describe speak more to the complexity of Bourne's character than any inherent heroic quality. I think we developed a lot of sympathy for the guy based on his bout with amnesia (during the first movie and continuing into this one) and . But there's obviously some...

    Catwoman and Bourne Supremacy

I agree completely, but there's no denying that it was a damnably impressive scene, undoubtedly made all the more harrowing by her being young, attractive, and terrified...perhaps leading to the illusion of "innocence". Hat's off to Stiles for her work in it.

    Catwoman and Bourne Supremacy

I actually found these to be two of the more affecting scenes in the movie. A bit of a slap in the face and a feeling of, "Whoa. He ain't pickin' daisies here." They also remind us of what he was trained to do, and what psychological toll that training took on him. All of which leads to my...

    Rate Bourne Supremecy (take two)

Gave it a 9. Haven't sat the edge of my seat like that since Harrison Ford's "The Fugitive", which gets my nod as the superior movie solely for Tommy Lee Jones' presence.
