    System burnout

Try another game. Maybe something rules-light and easy to learn that you can pull off at least as a one-shot without having to spend tons of time teaching new players how to play. I personally ordered Spirit of the Century for this very reason. I've played it once, and it's got a great game...

So Why Restrict Yourself To Only One Game Setting?

I am going to have to disagree with this being universal. Now, I certainly am in favor of deeply exploring a rich setting, however there's room for different approaches as well. The problem with your color and culinary analogies is that it's not really being suggested that someone mix...

    When it gets expensive!

The gaming market doesn't work that way. You might find a bargain on gaming items if for whatever reason their supply exceeds the demand (either due to poor sales or overproduction). The fact of the matter is that too often in a niche markets (or for niche products), such as those in gaming...

    FUDGE Dice shortages (Dresden Files)

I actually found one site that claimed to have *ONE* set of 4 white FUDGE dice... Sold out of every other color. I went ahead and bought those and many blanks in various colors. I guess I'll just be resorting to a permanent marker.

    FUDGE Dice shortages (Dresden Files)

Sure, though I guess my question was really does SotC really have a lot of information on the setting, or is it more about the game system and assumes that as earthlings, we might already know about the 1930's or have sources readily available for "setting" information. ;-) Forgive me if this...

What to purchase for a 7 year old

Have you considered the Castle Ravenloft game? It's very 4E like from what I've read, but with simpler and quicker paced rules. You don't have to worry about things like flanking and opportunity attacks and it might make a good introduction game.

    FUDGE Dice shortages (Dresden Files)

So, has anyone seemed to have noticed that there is a huge shortage of FUDGE style dice currently? I finally got around to ordering my own copy of Spirit of the Century, and decided to pick up The Dresden Files too. Apparently I'm not the only one checking out the Dresden Files, because it...

Do we want one dominant game, and why?

How could I borrow features I liked from other game systems if there is only one game out there? Just because I have a game of choice doesn't mean I don't want to do something different sometimes, or tweak what I have. Competition is healthy, and it is what brings new ideas and innovation.

    D&D 4E Cannons in 4e?

I don't think there are any, at least that I've seen. I'm not sure what you are looking for exactly either. I'm not really a simulationist kind of guy, so I'd probably consider the setting, the tier of play, what type of effect I was going for with it, whether the operators are assumed to know...

Which element could D&D stand to lose more?

You know, I just saw this comment as well, and I'd like to put in my 2 coppers worth. I don't dislike alignment, conceptually. As an idea or guideline, it's fine. However, it's implementation that I always dislike in alignment. I always felt like certain alignments were greatly misunderstood...

Which element could D&D stand to lose more?

Tough question... In the past, I had always had a dislike of elves, on principal... however, they simply belong in D&D despite my personal feelings. In the past, I strongly disliked Psionics, because it always felt like they were unbalanced and mostly played by powergamers and also I didn't...

    D&D on CNN!

The problem is that your opinion here is just that. Just because it's not your preference, and not what you think D&D is like, doesn't mean that it's a universal truth. I am someone who first saw D&D in the AD&D form, became a regular player during 2nd Ed, and was playing during the release of...

    D&D on CNN!

Agreed. The most frustrating part about edition warring is that I have seen potential players turned off from the game entirely because of them. I have been in the position before where I offered to DM a game of 4E for someone who was curious about D&D. Instead, one of their friends started...

    Opportunity Attacks

It doesn't matter what "moving through a square" means, because that's not the criteria for what provokes. The criteria is "leaves a square". If the large creature always occupies the square, then he did not leave it, right? I have no idea if WotC intended for it to work that way or not, but...

    Opportunity Attacks

There was a thread about this a long time ago as well, and that is my current conclusion. The monster didn't actually leave the square (he still in it), so it doesn't provoke. The rules do say when he leaves a square, not when he moves through a square adjacent to you. This seems to be clear...
