Lich's Phylactery and Personal Range Spells

Why don't I post a nice little picture :) "Sphere of force" to be developed. Sequester cast three times: once on phy, once on the inner sphere bunch, once on outer sphere. Chain contingency is available through Cydra spells (the Jester!). Symbols are ALL symbols (maybe even multiple castings of...

Lich's Phylactery and Personal Range Spells

I was wondering if there is any official word on this: Could a lich cast personal-range spells on his phylactery, provided that certain limitations (such as only one contingency at any one time) apply to both him and his phylactery? Thanks ciaran

The Ardick Campaign - Chapter One: Repentance

    * From the players' perspective: An opinion on the past which we do not remember. Here's a guess as to a scene from Mhoram's past which is unrelated to the main story arc. Read for fun. Skip if only interested in story main. There were no fields here, no forests or groves or meadows, just...

    Twin spell and summoning

Any official word on how this would work? Does it double the creatures summoned? The "Same area" text confuses me... Thanks, ciaran

Mind Blank vs. Turning and Control Undead

Mind Blank should counter Control Undead, should it not? What about Turn Undead? Thanks, ciaran

    Teleport and the Nixing Thereof

I'm surprised Sending is not mentioned. The power to remotely communicate is about as badly abusable as the power to teleport anywhere. Suddenly everyone has cell phone and teleporters and the DM gets very anxious... ciaran

    D&D 3E/3.5 Beefing up the 3.5 Bard?

I allow bards to know spells from the sorceror/wizard list, albeit as spells that are two levels higher. Since I use spell points, I remove this restriction for bards at 21st level. I also give them poisoncraft as per the system from athas.org for bards. ciaran

Why would Picasso or Einstein have so many hit points?

Why not simply allow the NPC Expert class (DMG) bypass skill rank maximums for level? If Einstein had an Int of 30, he'd have 16 skill points per level, and 64 at 1st level... plenty to justify that doctorate. ciaran

    Fix non-scaling parameters

So, the major point in 3/3.5 that's bothered me is non-scaling parameters: spell resistance, save DCs, and effective class levels. Unearthed arcana addressed a bit of it with "Magic Rating" (a near-clone of the "Magical Might" concept I've seen here in House Rules). Here are some ideas I was...

The top 2 reasons why gaming groups break up (that you can control)

No way in hell I'll ever buy a pregen'd module. Nothing fits into my world and I like it that way. Dm burnout for the above reasons (I've seen) tend to occur because the players are too lazy to help out. And yes, players need to help. ciaran

My latest gaming session and moral quandry-help (Long)

Right. And it's "ok" for evil doers to kill other PCs just to satisfy their alignment right? What are you talking about? PCs need to be ultimately treated differently because the premise of getting together and playing d&d is having fun. God forbid that you get your friend to write up a new...

    Normal/High Magic/Not Gritty How-To

Take it as a relative point to work from. If you have 17th-level PCs, you really should have a insert-high-high-levelnth wizard as the most powerful mage on the planet. I always evolve my NPCs at the same rate as my PCs. This only makes sense because evolution isn't (and shouldn't be) isolated...

    Normal/High Magic/Not Gritty How-To

Two paragraphs removed by Admin; when I said not to insult people, that also applies to not insulting people who prefer low magic games. I would have thought that was obvious. That said, a high magic game deteorates when the world shrinks around massively powerful characters/entities/etc. My...

(One More Time) You Got Sci-Fi in my Fantasy!

Though we do not switch systems at all, the characters in my game tend to switch between Sernia, the Dark Sun world, and O.B.O., a 1986 world (complete with Reaganomics). I think it's all good fun. We use the call of cthulhu d20 book for gun rules. The rest is standard. ciaran

DM's: You player just had a great idea...

I wouldn't use the idea, though I would give the player a lot of crap for giving me a good idea (make him sweat it until the next game hehe). Basically it's players against DM. It's a nice feeling. Heck, you would feel pretty leery giving your players the major weakness of your BBEG, right? :)...

Are you required to bring your own books when you game?

How do you guys tell your players that they need their own core books? Currently, I supply everything and it's a little bothersome when running npc spellcasters and combat while having to wait for 2 PCs who are both spellcasters themselves. ciaran

    Updating 3.0 Psions to 3.5

I have several characters/NPCs who are multiclassed via 3.0 Psion ability dependencies (an Illithid swashbuckler/psychoporter, warlock/telepath, etc. etc.). I am going to keep the various ability dependencies because I like the idea of different class combos with the psion (makes more sense in...
