    [ADULT - Medical Update] Angelsboi Q & A

Great to hear! :D :D Also - I have a bit of advice from my own (admittedly less serious) health crisis: When people offer you favors, take them up on it. If your mom offers to visit and take care of you, let her. People offer to come over to entertain you, let them. Someone offers to shop...

    Girl Gamer Stereotypes...or lack thereof?

Actually, this isnot true. I saw this news article a few days ago with mis-leading titles like: "Video games now draw more women than boys". If you read the article closely, you'll discover the following percentages: Boys (7-18) 21% Girls(7-18) 12% Men 18+ 38% Women 18+ 26% Thus...

    Game Stores in NYC

Thanks for the offer, but it's looking more and more like I'll need to come in to work this weekend. :(

    Game Stores in NYC

Ack! I just called them and they said they're closing. Today! Anyway, I guess I'll just have to hit NY.

He Says Nobody Can Beat His Tower

I don't know about the rest of it, but a set of rust monsters with improved invisibility cast on them work nicely for iron golems (I'm not even sure that they need improved invisibility -- is eating an attack?). Oh course, the tricky part is capturing the rust monsters before they put a big...

    Game Stores in NYC

Actually, it's not the scenery. Most of New Jersey is beautiful and the ugly parts lead to NYC, so I don't mind them. It's actually the people. I've never met a group of people so willing to go out of their way to be mean. And it's not NYC (people there seem to act like people in big cities...

    Game Stores in NYC

I'm going back home to California (San Diego to be specific). And never coming back, ever. Seriously. At least not to New Jersey. Or at least the New Jersey part of the New York greater metro area. I've been doing an internship here. But if the game day happens before I go and I'm not...

    Game Stores in NYC

Err... Is it happening on 10/25? I'll be gone by then. I'm leaving town (well, New Jersey) on the 26th of September.

    Game Stores in NYC

Hi All - I was wondering if anyone could point me to gaming stores in NYC? I'm looking for two things: (1) Someplace to get my video gaming fix. I'm looking for a store that offers more than first-person shooter games (something like Warcraft is good, but RPG offerings are better). (2)...

What It's Like For a Gamer Girl

My bad on the grammar. And yes water is wet.

What It's Like For a Gamer Girl

Within each specific social context, of course. I get the feeling you are attempting to show a point. But just as easily as Afrodyte can be overemotional in her reaction to impersonally meant arguments, the men she games with can be overemotional in trying to defend their own insecurities. I...

What It's Like For a Gamer Girl

Oh - and I'd like to agree with Kahuna Burger: There are no unemotial human social interactions. It is truly that some emotions that are more ok for women and some for men. But it sound to me like the original post might be a case of the emotion of being afraid of emotion. :)

What It's Like For a Gamer Girl

It appears I've responded to the wrong nit-pick above. My bad. The point being made was that it seemed people were approving of the "male" mode of behavior: I was just pointing out that I don't necessarily think the "male" (or geek or whatever) way is the right way, it just is. Maybe I...

What It's Like For a Gamer Girl

Ok then : The argumentative way of acting commonly found amoung groups of groups of geeks. Although I did state above that if I found a stereotype useful, I wouldn't hesitate to use it. :D

What It's Like For a Gamer Girl

Let me be clear that I am in no way approving of the male way of acting. I consider myself to be a "front-line feminist" - i.e. I deal with this problem every day. The *reality* is that more men game than women and more men do computer science than women. Therefore, the prevailing social norms...

What It's Like For a Gamer Girl

Might I also suggest: He Says, She Says: Closing the Communications Gap Between the Sexes by Lillian Glass Although I haven't finished it, I found it helpful. Say what you want about stereotypes: when they apply you may as well learn them. Also - I might suggest...

What It's Like For a Gamer Girl

BTW, d20Dwarf: I had a bum knee when I came up with the screen-name. So while it is true that I am "anything but lame", it's more a physical reality than anything else. :-)

What It's Like For a Gamer Girl

Well - I haven't posted in forever (though I have been keeping track of Angelsboi's illness :-(, but I had to contribute a little here since I almost constantly feel I am in the minority by being female (I'm also a computer scientist by trade - sue me for being stereotypical). begin...

What I hate about A Song of Ice and Fire (Spoilers Ahead)

I'd just like to point out to Son_of_Thunder that in Tad Williams' books Simon (arguably the lead character) does commit murder, and in a not very nice way. Still, on the whole, I'd prefer Williams to Martin, but that's just because I'm sick of people dying. It's the volume that gets to me.
