D&D 5E 5e Paladin: Inspiring Leadership versus Polearm Master?

Polearm Master seems really quite good. An extra 1d4 + 3 or 4 dmg. + Magic bonus per attack seems quite good. Level 1 Paladin with 17 Str. and 17 Cha., and maybe 18/18 at Level 4, would be doing 1d4 + 8 damage with the Devotion Paladin's magic weapon buff. This is on top of any attacks of...

Avenging Shackles + World Serpent's Grasp + Distant Vengeance (+/- Closing Pledge). Is it fun?

Has anyone played around with this? The thought of knocking an enemy of my choice prone and slowing it perpetually sounds fun. Closing Pledge might help me maneuver away from any additional baddies sent after me. Level 1 Razorclaw Shifter Avenger Censure of Pursuit DEX/WIS: 18 Theme...

    DMG 2: Achievements like Xbox-Live in D&D

Not a big fan of "Achievements" in video games, but a lot of people do like them. Discovered a Lost Religion I kind of dig this achievement. Maybe because, if the players know about what they can achieve, they'll go out of their way for something like this. It allows history/backstory see the...

Reducing PC HP for more challenging fights? By how much? (Shorter fights problem.)

I could be wrong, but wouldn't decreasing monster HP increase the potency of slow/immobilization effects? You're more likely to drop a monster before it hits you. I suppose it depends on the group/power selection, but it could lead to a ranged-heavy group making quick work of melee monsters...

Reducing PC HP for more challenging fights? By how much? (Shorter fights problem.)

I'm definitely receptive to the idea, maybe I'll have my players give it a try. I know one player often has trouble grabbing the right dice! I even make sure to give him dice of different colors (e.g. blue d10s, etc.) As I remember this, I'm DEFINITELY going to try this. Well, I proposed a...

Having PCs roll "Defenses" rather than the DM rolling "Attacks"

Tried it out a little last night, and it seemed to work okay with reasonably prompt player responses. I do think my players enjoyed the concept (which they may have proposed) that, if they roll a 20, they get to do something cool. We will see if said rule increases the maximum fun-ocity of the...

    Racial stat increases

It help retains racial flavor? It prevents an 18 Str./ 18 Con. Eladrin, for instance. Both are simple fixes. While an 18 Str./18 Con. Eladrin isn't going to make my head explode, I think allowing a single free floating +2 is sufficient. Actually, I'm currently allowing a Dwarf Cleric with a...

Reducing PC HP for more challenging fights? By how much? (Shorter fights problem.)

I'll keep that in mind, though I kind of enjoy the ability to use a monster's stat block straight from the book. (I do adjust minion damage, +1/2 level, but writing that into the book isn't tough.) Do you mean killing or KOing? Since I've had a cleric PC who wasn't at maximum HP (but close)...

Reducing PC HP for more challenging fights? By how much? (Shorter fights problem.)

One player thinks the fights should be shorter, since I've been running fights that were Level + 2 recently, 4 times a day. (Though I think the players could be much quicker with their decision making, but they're all new RPers, and we've been having big gaps between sessions recently.) I'm...

    Racial stat increases

If it wasn't mentioned already, keeping the racial stats as is but giving all races a +2 to a stat of their choice while reducing point-buy to 20 keeps overall stats the same, while allowing Elf Warlocks. As noted, a Str/Wis. dwarf with Dwarven Weapon Training is something to keep an eye out for.

    Monsters and Action Points

I recall reading that idea, and I liked it, though I'm not sure if it will solve the core problem of fights not being tough enough. Maybe I just need to get better at designing fights: up the difficulty when terrain/area will impede the monsters more than the players. Stupid PCs, using tactics...

    Monsters and Action Points

Yeah, I tried doing a two-fight day for a while, with encounters at around 4 levels above the party's level. (Primary tweak was x2 use of Encounter Utilities, since magic items weren't an issue at the time.) Also halved Healing Surges per day, which I don't think was an appropriate tweak. It...

    Personality

Re-skinning a PC is great. One house rule that was suggested here, and I now use is: follow the rules, but use the 20-point buy instead of the 22-point buy AND give everyone +2 to the stat of their choice. For optimal balance, you might need to adjust a couple things (debuff Humans slightly...

    D&D 4E Burning Wheel-style Artha and Instincts/Beliefs in 4E?

Perhaps, though I also want to make sure that the non-combat uses aren't viewed as significantly less potent, and I do like the idea of regaining encounter powers and such. Seems more fun than just a bonus to a combat roll. As for the other options, I kind of like them. For example, allowing...

    D&D 4E Burning Wheel-style Artha and Instincts/Beliefs in 4E?

You might be right, also, your Fate/Persona/Deeds per session guidelines have a nice layering to them, though in practice, I think I'd dole out Fate/Persona less than you theorized, and Deeds more often. Though I might be biased since I'm thinking of handing out a Deeds point if they choose to...

    D&D 4E Burning Wheel-style Artha and Instincts/Beliefs in 4E?

Burning Wheel has a nifty system involving Instincts and Beliefs, and you're rewarded with Artha points for doing certain things, with said Artha points basically giving you a bonus to a roll. An instinct is something that your character is assumed to do, but won't do if it'd get him in...

A Question for the 25 and under crowd - What have you read?

I haven't read Rowling, Brooks or Jordan, though I'll read the first few novels of Rowling's some day I suspect. I'm actively avoiding Brooks and Jordan. What stories I read of Vance, I did not enjoy, nor did I really enjoy Leiber's work.

A Question of Overpowered Racial Powers

I'm confused. The Human At-Will is often, but not always, useful. Even if the racial Eldritch Blast has the option of a favored stat (like Str.), it's going to benefit melee oriented classes the most. These classes can already use a heavy thrown weapon, and Eldritch Blast 1d10 + Stat, right...

    Master of Missiles Paragon Path

Unfailing Caster looks alright. One other note: possibly change the Special on the Level 20 Daily to be an attribute other than Intelligence. Otherwise, 99% of the time the Wizard's Intelligence will be high enough to hit only enemies, and in that case, you might just want to word it as: Burst...
