D&D 5E 2 types of warrior and 2 types of spellcaster and a perspective

It's easy to see why EGG and company designed OD&D to have 3 classes: Fighter, Magic-User and Cleric. Fighter encompassed both the stalkers and the tanks. Any differences between were left to role-playing. This also allows the class to cover characters that were a little of each. Was Conan a...

    Hit Dice

That's right, all weapons did 1d6 damage.. Definitely would have an impact..

    Hit Dice

The OD&D LBB's specified the same hit dice type (d6) for all classes, with a few modifications. Fighters got another d6 every level (+1 hp at most levels); mages got another d6 every other level, +1 or 2 hp on the levels where they didn't a full hd; clerics were a straight d6. The only CON...

Myth & Magic - Paladins and Rangers

They're talking sometime in October at the earliest now :( I just want to see what they're doing with the paladin. They made it a "gift" for people who supported the quickstarter, but those days are gone now.. sigh..

Myth & Magic - Paladins and Rangers

Does anyone have the "official" Myth&Magic writeups for the Paladin and Ranger classes, or a link to said writeups? I'm really excited about the "new" rpg. Gracias!

    D&D 2E What was wrong with 2e?

I soo agree about the percentile exceptional strength! Having mortal ability scores over 18 were such a problem back in the day. Of course, in 3.x it's not crazy to have an ability score of 25; and deities and many others can have scores in the 90's (Think Thor). Where is the balance? I also...

    D&D 2E What was wrong with 2e?

I can definitely agree about the mechanics.. D20 blows THAC0 out of the water. I also prefer the unified experience table and the Fortitude/Reflex/Will save model (I actually prefer one saving throw with modifiers, but I'm a grognard). The biggest problem I have had with 3.x (and Pathfinder)...

    D&D 2E What was wrong with 2e?

Most of the "legacy love" for D&D seems focused on AD&D 1e (tho there are grognards like me who still prefer BECMI, B/X, Holmes, or even the LBB's). I have heard/read a lot of derisive comments about 2e; but I always thought that, at least initially, 2e was a distillation of 1e + UA + whatever...

    D&D 2E As a strategy 4e or 2e on classes

What? You mean people don't like the Shardmind Runepriest? :p

    Something I've noticed about Druid.

Just FYI, in BECM, druids (and druidic-magic-users) were limited to non-metallic armor And weapons.. so much so that when the Princess Ark series introduced "Druidic Knights", there was a special spell that made wood as hard as metal, so as to make effective wooden weapons. One more curious...

    Spontaneous blasting

Sorcerers don't need this.. They have full spontaneous casting. It's kind of like a warlock's eldritch blast, or a more powerful magic missle, depending on how many spell slots/levels you trade. A wizard would never have to be stuck with only a Web spell when s/he needs to blast something...

    Spontaneous blasting

The "new" Myth & Magic has a class talent (cough Feat cough) that allows a wizard to use a spell slot or 2 to generate a sort of "eldritch blast".. I think the damage is 1D6/ 2 slots. I am Not a big fan of "at-will" powers, especially those that cause damage; I would much rather have...

    Spell scaling

I am Not a fan of having cantrips/at-wills that cause damage. However, Myth & Magic has a class talent (cough Feat cough) that allows using a couple spell slots to generate a sort of "eldritch blast". This sort of "spontaneous blast" is kind of equivalent to 3.x "spontaneous healing". Short...

    Spell scaling

I kinda like the idea of casting spells at higher levels. Sorcerers (3.x) have the ability to use higher slots for lower spells if need be; it would be cool if doing that would increase the effectiveness of the spell. I can definitely see using this with spontaneous casting. If you're...

    Spell scaling

I'm curious as to the direction that DNDN is taking with regards to the increasing power of spells as a character advances. Let's say a wizard hits 5th level, where s/he gets to use 3rd level spells. Of course, s/he picks something like Fireball which deals 1D6 per caster level. This means...

    Alternatives to At-Will Magic

I still think the answer is spontaneous casting. That way if you want to cast 12 magic missiles, you can.. but that expends your spell slots. If you want to give mages at-wills, make them Very minor, like mage hand, light, read magic, etc. Nothing that could cause damage.

Why Do Clerics Get to Spontaneously Cast Their Prepared Spells, But Not Wizards?

I also kinda like making "turn undead" into a spell. That way clerics have one pool of power from which to draw.

Why Do Clerics Get to Spontaneously Cast Their Prepared Spells, But Not Wizards?

I would make both clerics and mages spontaneous casters. They would differ in that mages would be limited to the spells they have prepared (or in their spellbook), while clerics would be able to cast any spell appropriate to their level and domain (as "answers to prayer") I like the idea of...

    Wacky pseudo-Vancian casting sytem (long)

The DCC magic model isn't bad, but I think it might be a bit too convoluted. I like the idea of rolling for casting success: an epic failure means it blows up in the caster's face, a failure means it doesn't work, a success means it works, and a great success means it works And you get to...

Pathfinder 2nd Edition (no, don't get excited!)

I know a lot of people like the "goodies" given to each class in PF. I'm not one of them. For my experience, all the many new choices just complicate and slow-down character creation. If 3.5 was panned for too many feats, PF has the same problem magnified. I'd like to see all the...
