'Community' to have a Dungeons & Dragons episode

For anyone that would like to see the commercial in question: YouTube - Community Thursday Night Promo for 2/3/2011

D&D Encounters: Admission charge or free?

None of the local shops charge to participate in Encounters. I do know however that they charge for 'private' use of tables during un-scheduled hours. If stores want to charge a fee I suppose that's their right, but from my perspective I wouldn't pay $5 per week to participate. That puts the...

D&D 4E Well, Its Official. 4E is Going Online

I can see a lot of benefit for players that don't have a local shop or player community to get involved with. If they can get the VTT fully functional and relatively idiot-proof then it'd go a long way to padding DDI's appeal. Still wouldn't really appeal to me though. I've got a good local...

Why did you stop subscribing to DDI?

I cut off my subscription after the builder/DM tools were moved to an online-only format. With a downloadable version I was more in control of the costs for using and updating the software. I also got to keep what I had paid for up to that point. Dungeon/Dragon aren't nearly sufficient for me...

'Community' to have a Dungeons & Dragons episode

Community is one of the few shows I actually make a point of watching as soon as it airs (either on television or the following days via Hulu or some other thing). Hopefully this D&D episode works out as well as 'Modern Warfare' and 'Epidemiology'.

What if WotC just said "That's it."

I'd probably keep on hosting games until the players stopped coming. I've got enough material to run three different editions of D&D plus a retroclone that's pretty much self contained. Then there are a half dozen other RPGs I have various levels of material for, enough that frankly I'm trying...

    What's in your DM Kit?

As of my current setup: Red Box Box with: Maps (and/or tiles) Small baggies of markers and tokens 'Community Dice' (1d20 for each player, 5d6, 2d4, and a mix of all else) DM Screen Character Sheets And a carrier bag with: Notebook Notepad (tracking combat information) Assorted pencils...

Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG from Goodman Games

Sounds potentially good on paper, but I have to ask: Was it absolutely necessary to add three more sizes of dice to the game?

    Is it time for 5E?

No, 5th Edition is not 'right around the corner' and I imagine it won't be for quite some time. This, no matter how upset people are that Essentials has changed future product design and development. I mean, I'm assuming it's Essentials that has started all this '5th edition' and 'Wizards of...

80% Rule: Are you a DM or player

I have always been the Dungeon Master, Game Master, Storyteller, Referee, etc. I love the chance to tell a story, direct the action (somewhat) and entertain people and I've been fortunate to thus far have found many gamers that enjoy my style and approach.

Is the red box all it's cracked up to be?

I wouldn't. The hardcover PHBs cost over $10 more than the Heroes of... books on Amazon. While the trade off is fewer classes/races, the price is right if you're on a tight gaming budget. Now, could you replace the Dungeon Master's Kit with the Hardcover Dungeon Master's Guide? Sure, but you...

Is the red box all it's cracked up to be?

For a group completely new to 4e, the bare minimum budget 'buy-in' would probably be the Red Box + Heroes of (Fallen Lands/Forgotten Kingdoms). This gives the DM and Players enough material to get to about level 4 or 5. However, while this is a budget buy-in of about $30 USD (Amazon) shipped...

    Backstory - How Not To

Back-story isn't terrible in of itself but it should probably be generic and simple enough that one or two players aren't going to be dictating the direction or theme of the game for everyone else. This allows a DM to slot character background into a campaign without having to re-write or write...

    Congrats Frog God / Mythmere

It was an overview of this new 'complete' version that made me pull the trigger on purchasing the pdf. I had previously used the free download version and enjoyed running an old school session with it. This expanded version has a great selection of options and additions, especially w/ regards to...

    2010 Retrospective: 1Q Products

I've only purchased Underdark and Hammerfast out of those. Underdark ended up not quite being what I was hoping for, but given the overwhelmingly positive reviews and feedback it received I think it's safe to say it was a win overall. I've used material from it here and there enough to warrant...

The new Gamma World - Thoughts/Questions

A summary of my thoughts/observations on Gamma World after working with it for most of the evening: I need more time with the GW monsters to really get a full idea of how they scale but I can't see any reason why you couldn't do cross overs in either direction. The monsters are formatted almost...

Confused: Dark Sun Setting vs. Guide

While I can't judge the Dark Sun books (despite my best efforts my group had zero interest) as I don't own them, but from looking at the FR and Eberron guides I can agree there's a lot of geographical/political/social cross over through both books. It's necessary obviously. Players need to know...

Against the Cult of the Reptile Gods -- FREE?

I think it's pretty unlikely that we'll get a 4th ed version of N1. Alumni articles generally don't go into too much conversion detail. I remember that Bargle was converted back around the time 4e was released, but for the most part these are just discussions about history and design concepts...

    Suits Or Pieces Of Armor?

I in general prefer less to keep track of. So I like systems that assume armor is an entire suit and operates with a collective property. Not to say systems that use multiple pieces and hit locations and so forth are necessarily bad. I understand the appeal. It's just a bit much for me.

    D&D 4E 4E Adventure Tools a blast

Adventure tools is my go-to for monster lists. I copy/paste the stat blocks to a document that I print out and that becomes my reference for all of my encounters for the session. I can even clip it to my screen in some cases. For that program and functionality alone I'd pay the DDI subscription.
